COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally brewed in 2009 to celebrate Specialty Imports’ 30th Anniversary, XXX Black Double IPA is now produced each winter. XXX offers bold, American hop character — comfortably cloaked in dark, luxurious malt. This exciting “winter warmer” will take the chill right out of your bones. Curl up with this session-beer-meets-nightcap.

Sometimes XXX just means 30.

In 2009, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Specialty Imports’ specialty wine and beer import business, Midnight Sun Brewing Company brewed a very special beer--a black double IPA--to honor this Alaska company’s long-term success. In 2010 this beer was added to MSBC’s "seasonal double IPA" line-up.

22 oz bottle. Pours a dark cola brown color with a medium sized beige head. The aroma had roasted malt, pine, citrus, and a strange kitchen cleaner note that distracted. The flavor was roasted malt, pine and citrus hops, hints of cleaner, soy as it warmed. This was a disappointment from this brewery.

Bottle: Pours opaque with a khaki head. Resiny aroma with some roasted fruitiness as well. Burnt raisins and hempy notes. Silky body with a smooth rich roasted black malt flavor, mocha and a rich hempy resiny hop flavor. Balanced, rich, straight forward.

Bottle opaque black. Nose starts like hop, but followed by chemical, cleaner smell. Taste starts with hint of fruit and pine hop, but immediately replaced with roast and char. Mid palate bitterness and long finish.

Jessica and I both loved this beer. Some Hops with a great malt balance. Wish I had easier access to it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from city beer. Pours black with eggshell head. Taste is very bitter with a sharp bite of roasted malts. Differently on the dark stout side.

Bottle. Pours a near black color with a smallish tan head on it. Nose has almost some worcestershire sauce on the nose with just a little bit of hoppy bitterness coming through underneath. Taste is bitter and just a little bit roasty, but seems very disconnected from the nose. Very interesting...

On tap at the source... Pours a cola resembling consistency, lesser intense at the edges and topped with a creamy lighter than khaki... Aroma somewhat lacking on the hop front with a bit more malt focus. Anise and cocoa - very light on the citrus...Flavors are a mixture if anise, chocolate, and a green piney citrus bent. Semi-sweet with a slight added bitterness in the backend. Medium bodied with adequate carbonation.
