COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

ClubGonzo (5685) - Bergen, NORWAY - APR 25, 2011
Bottle from Vinmonopolet in Valkendorfsgate, Bergen. Pours a deep brown hazy body with a bronze taint and a big, off-white head that vanishes rather quickly. Nose is sweet, buttery caramel, malt extract, toffee and that unmistakable "Midtfyn aroma". Pretty nice, though. Taste is very, very sweet and laden with expressive, massive tones of caramel - the home-made version where you take butter, sugar and a bit of cream and simmer it in a pan until it’s brown liquid ("knekk" in Norwegian). Some raisins and booze lurk underneath the surface too, along with traces of wood and the toffee version of caramel. This is too sweet for me, but could make as a nice dessert-like sipper I guess.

Bottle. Pours slightly hazy darkish amber with airy off-white head. Clear aroma of fruit, malt, yeast and caramel. Booze in the long nose. Sweet flavour of caramel malt, with fruity and estery touches and pronounced, bitter alcohol notes. Bittersweet aftertaste with mild hints of metal. An OK Barley Wine, but I have tasted better beers of this style.

(50 cl.

Pours hazy dark amber with thick, creamy off-white head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, light citrus and hops. Very sweet-ish. Taste echoes that, very sweet, toffee and butterscotch like character. Finish is abrupt but sweet and light boozy, although the alcohol is controlled very well throughout. Body is medium creamy with flat carbonation.

Aroma of sweet malts, caramel, fudge, raisins, ripe fruits, barley sugar. This Barley Wine is caramel fudge beer incarnate. Flavour is heavy sweetness, loads of caramel and caramelized sugar. Admirable, especially the aroma, but a bit too sweet and sticky for my taste.

Dickinsonbeer (5073) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - APR 17, 2010
.5 liter bottle. Thanks to Simon from In de Wildeman for giving me this!! Appearance is dark amber, slightly clear, thin head dissipating, light lace. Aroma is smell caramel, toffee, raisin, fruity esters, light american hops, slight oxidations, big sweet fruity ester. Flavor is earthy leather, caramel sweet malt, toffee, brown sugar, raisin, slight apple. Smooth in the finish wiht a nice green grassy bitterness- overall a pretty solid barleywine.
