500ml bottle from Bierkompass
The beer in the glass is deep black with dark brown, creamy foam. It smells strongly of roasted coffee, licorice and dark malts. Starts with intense roasted malts and a lot of coffee and liquorice, slightly sweet on the palate. The middle part has strong aromas of licorice and roasted malts, with a massive malt body. Light smoke notes coming through. The beer comes in a very malty and roasty, licorice and smoky finish!

(50 cl bottle) Pours black with thick, rich toffee head. Good retention and lace. Aroma slightly herbal but mostly dark and toasted malt with notes of licorice. Creamy on the palate, softly carbonated, full body with an astringent finish. Taste is dark but not bitter with little residual sweetness and faint acidic notes.

abstractbeer (241) - NORWAY - NOV 11, 2011
Bottle, from my new favorite "Vinmonopol". Pours a pretty black thing, with slightly blood-red edges. Half a cm of milk chocolate colored head which falls down rather quickly. The aroma is roasted malts and coffee, with hints of red berries, like a faint whiff of raspberries. Flavor is - in order of appearance, more or less: licorice, leather, bitter chocolate, coffee - lots of coffee in the finish - and leather too. Then roasted dark grains. With fruity edges. There’s a lot going on here, I’m having difficulties picking up on everything, and also the beer is straight from the fridge so it’s quite cold yet. Combined with peanuts and chocolate I get a slightly solventy flavor. Anyhow, the taste is quite bitter - no surprise since the bottle claims 104 IBUs - but with such a malty backbone, I find it to be nicely balanced. Mouthfeel is full, carbonation low, but present.

Marsiblursi (3076) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - NOV 11, 2011
(Bottle) Pours black with a medium sized brown head. The aroma is robust roasted with clear hoppy notes. Tones of coffee, fruity cocoa, sweaty liquorice, complex tobacco, earth, citrus, sal ammoniac candy, vanilla powder, raisins, black currant, light smoke and light honey. New world profile wise, yet a really good example of the style. The flavour is light to medium sweet, more than medium bitter and light acidic. Tones of coffee, chocolate/cocoa, tobacco, liquorice, light fruity, citric, vanilla and light earth. Great balance. The mouthfeel is round, soft, and velvety with a light to medium carbonation. Bitter cocoa and light citrus on the finish. Medium to full bodied.
