Tasted on tap at Cassel’s in Christchurch. Big, dark and smells inviting: vanilla, char and chocolate. A big, black pint with a small white head that subsided in short order. Tasty, licorice and vanilla to the fore, lip smacking and tasty with a finish that verges toward the sweet. Not a bad effort this.

On tap at Beervana. Dark pour, very dark brown almost black with a small off white head on top. Cocoa powder and toasted biscuit at the forefront of the aroma. Slight vanilla note through it. Dark chocolate and roasted malts in the taste with a sweetness behind it all. Little thin on the palate. Solid

Pours black with a hint of red, good light brown head, lacing for Africa. Cocoa bean, coffee, molasses, vanilla (not sure why), burnt toffee, Liquorish, Nana’s sherry. Full body - oily/creamy, soft carbonation, bitter finish. Very bitter/sweet upfront, nice round smooth bitter finish with some burnt toast in the tail.

In the glass, from a 750ml bottle. Light scent of roasted nuts and coffee on the nose, over a brown frothy head and black black porter. Surprisingly sweet on the tounge, but overall a bit light. Very smooth, but there is a long bitter coffee finish. Overall, this felt a bit light for what I’d want from an Imperial Porter. Almost watery, which hides the alcohol more than is probably desirable for such a potent brew. I expected more to be honest, this was, well, a good porter - not an exceptional one.

On tap at the local taphouse. Great imperial porter. Aromas of chocolate, caramel, and vanilla. Taste is sweet, with bitter notes, and very long length. Palate is syrupy, and full bodied. Black, with an off-white head.
