750ml bottle (thanks FatPhil). Clear redish copper color. Huge size, frothy beige head, stays. Booze, sweet, caramel, raisins, plums and weird chemical notes in aroma. 750ml bottle, thanks FatPhil. Pours clear reddish brown, beige head stays. Aroma is buckwheat, malty, barley, raisins, plums, fruity. Taste is boozy, prunes, fruity. Buckwheat in aftertaste, lots of booze. Medium bodied, average carbo. Really nice taste, but boozy.

The buckwheat version in this popular series of barleywines made by Mikkeller and Three Floyds at Flanders' Proef. From a 75 cl bottle bought at Gedeelde Vreugde in Sint-Niklaas. Very thick, whipped cream-like, cobweb-lacing, moussy, egg-white, yet fairly quickly thinning head; misty peach blonde colour with warm amberish tinge, lightly hazy but misty and more ochre-ish with sediment. Aroma of marmelade, mandarin peel, soggy sandwiches, baker's yeast, sweet cicely, carraway seed - could be the buckwheat actually, pineapple, dried apricot, cream, old blanket, dried basil, yellow raspberry, banana. Very fruity, rather estery flavour, banana, peach and ripe pear notes, sweetish with a lingering residual 'white' sugariness to it, laying a honeyish layer over a rounded, medium carbonated, bit fluffy, bready malt body with subtle spicy and grainy sides to it which doubtlessly represent the buckwheat; ends a tad phenolic (cloves) with more 'colourful' spicy notes (sweet cicely, vague aniseed perhaps) as well as some 'orangey' freshness; yeasty aspects linger alongside a mild herbal hop bitterness and warming, 'jenever'-ish alcohol. Feels very 'Belgian' actually, almost sweet tripel-like more than actually barleywine-like, for which it would need a more vinous and more clean character; that said, a rich, desserty beer for sure, adorned with some subtle but delicate aromatic spicy notes. Best beer i have ever tasted. The alcohol is in balance with the rest of the beer, that just gives a fantastic hoppy,sweet BW!
