2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 8/20
UPDATED: MAY 31, 2012 Averaging the two ratings
330ml bottle (Drink Shop, Tallinn) (7-:3+:7-:4:2=2.3)
7- Immediately after pouring a cooooold bottle from the fridge, this had a lovely citrussy hoppy aroma, with just a gentle sweet biscuity caramelly malt component too. Alas, by the time you can smell biscuity malts, you know the body’s going to be overly caramelly and biscuity.
3+ Slightly hop hazy (I presume) orange. Healthy white frothy head with fair persistence.
7- Pretty good in the mouth, the biscuity malts are quite moderate, in fact they are just sweet enough to balance out the hops nicely. The hops are citrussy, but relatively moderate. Fairly simple taste, but there’s nothing wrong with that.
4 Crisp palate, carbonation and the coldness give you quite a slap round the chops before the hops have even started to kick in. (Note - that’s generally not a positive thing, but it was fitting for this beer, so in this case shouldn’t be taken as a criticism.) The post-swallowing vapours are very nice, the biscuity malts still not giving up, and refusing to let the hops rule every aspect of the beer. Then again, that’s not hard, the hops aren’t that extreme, there’s a nice resiny and grapefruity dryness, and that zing hangs around for quite a nice while. Best of all, it isn’t oppressively drying, and doesn’t leave you thirstier than when you started. Nearly as good as the original Alpo’s IPA for getting the resininess just right.
2 Technically, not a bad beer. In fact, on any level, this is not a bad beer - I enjoyed this quite a lot. That’s saying a lot, as I expected to hate it. I conclude that either I drank something different from other raters, in which case Mikkeller should be slapped hard for abysmal consistency, or in fact it’s nowhere near 1000 IBU, in which case Mikkeller should be slapped hard for the "1000 IBU" bullshit. (Nope, saying "theoretical" is no get-out-clause - the whole thing’s marketting bullshit, and you’re wankers for wanting to using it.) I don’t want to dilute the only "1" overall that I currently have, so I won’t give it that. However, whilst I ponder what’s a fair total score for the beer, I’ll leave this at a "2", as I think the slapping needs to be pretty severe. In fact, if this had been a disgusting undrinkable alkaloid mess, I would have given it a higher overall score (but lower everywhere else, obviously).
Rerate: 330ml bottle (Drink Shop, Tallinn) - shared with Mirjukka and Janne as the first beer of the day after the Wappu eve before - cheers! (7:3:7:4:13)
Lovely citrussy aromatics, orangy and lemony at the top, and grtapefruity once those higher peaks subside. Lovely bitter bite, long resiny finish. Surprisingly bitter finish. A good beer to wake up to. So zesty. The IBU’s still marketting bullshit of course, but it’s a pretty tasty beer, and my ire is subsiding.
A hazed amber ale with a thick collapsing lacing mocha head. In aroma, loads of resinous floral hops, grapefruit pulp, herbaceous and pungent. In mouth, a nice crisp biscuit malt with loads of citrusy resinous floral hops, grapefruit pulp, nice and resilient, still good after a few years. Bièropholie imports. quite thin bodied, lemon peel, moderate carbonation, super pithy, dry
From the very old notes, hence this is not a real rating, but more just a mark to myself that I have tried this at one point. Very bitter and very hoppy, not really drinkable, but didn’t mind it as an experiment. GenDV138 (7285) - Falls Church, Virginia, USA - DEC 31, 2014
12 oz bottle poured into a tulip. Popped the cap and it was an instant gusher. Clear amber with off-white head. Aromas of toasty notes, citrus, resin. Tastes of bitter citrus, toasty notes, bland biscuit. Medium-light body with a dry finish. Mostly just bitter and bland. LoganL166 (25) - Iowa, USA - DEC 19, 2014
Bottle poured into a snifter. Really curious how old this beer is, awful aroma with a pretty decent looking pour and head. Taste is awful, can’t get past anything beside the huge bitterness. Really trying to pick up some flavors but just keep subjecting myself to a wrecked palate and a bitterness that won’t go away.

Tap at Ei8ht Ball. Lasting resinous hop action. Clean body, but big resin. "Old School" NW piny resinous tones. No tropical "New School" tones. Quite nice, unique. Clean, balanced. slowrunner77 (12051) - Reno, Nevada, USA - SEP 11, 2014
"BA and RB say this is retired, but it’s new on the shelves here (though it definitely did not seem all too fresh). Really a pointless brew, and this coming from someone who liked the 1000 ibu and 1000 ibu light Mikkeller has put out, rating them 3.9 and 3.6. This, though had a bland flavor followed up by an unpleasant bitterness. For $5.99, a waste. From my favorite foreign brewery this was a letdown." boozedude (2228) - Des Moines, Iowa, USA - SEP 4, 2014
