Rating #500. Tap @ Mikkeller Bar. Pours tarry black with a nice brown head. Aroma has a nice barrel quality up front, calvados apple notes, oak, syrup, vanilla, thick chocolate, cassanade, dark wood, just really complex and amazing. The barrel is really nicely incorporated in the taste, apple touch from the calvados, vanilla, syrup, coffee, roasted malts, really nice balance. The after taste has a nice spicy calvados touch. This barrel just improves the beer in every direction, one of the best beers I’ve had this year. Good stuff! Jaksmart (456) - Aarhus, DENMARK - JUN 1, 2011
Tap @ Mikkeller Bar. Pours black with a beautiful brown head. Aroma has subtle roast, sugar, massive oak presence, dark and vicious fruits, some alkohol, dough, smooth chocolate and espresso. Very nicely balanced and almost without alcohol. The aroma beckons you in for a dark and ominous treat; it is sinister and positively delightful. Taste is very thick and chewy, extremely well-balanced, nice oaky notes, well managed and almost no alcohol. The finish is long and sweet - delicious. Managed and decisive. Lots of coffee and sweet chocolate. Also vanilla and some more bourbon-ish notes. Extremely nice. RasmusOtt (2910) - Aarhus, DENMARK - JUN 1, 2011
Thanks to phredrik for the tick. Pours pitch black with a coffee brown head. Aroma is dark wood, bourbon, salmiak, burnt sugar, burnt caramel, dried berries, coffee, light sour apples and a bit of billiard - great balance here. Taste is oaky, salmiak, burnt caramel, dark chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, light bourbon and some vinous sour apple notes to keep it in balance. by far the best Black ever.

On tap @ Mikkeller Bar
Pours black with a caramel head.
Aroma is full of roasted malts alongside dark fruits and some oaky flavor. Syrupy note.
Taste is wonderful, very heavy with some cherry and vanilla. Slightly chocolaty and coffee. Strong alcoholic freshness/burn. Some apple sourness from the Calvados. Very creamy, an incredible beer. The aftertaste is long and holds much of the acidic notes Baltimorioles (40) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - JUN 6, 2011
Doing this review from memory. The taste of calvados is very noticeable and pleasant. Although high in alcohol content, no real burn until the end of the glass. Surprisingly drinkable and nice. ClubGonzo (5683) - Bergen, NORWAY - JUN 10, 2011
On tap @ Mikkeller Bar, Copenhagen. Pitch black body, small caramel head. Nose is lots of oak, calvados (quite present), vanilla, leather and lots of alcohol. Nice. Taste comes in waves of alcohol, bringing along charcoal, leather, calvados, oak and vanilla. Dry, hot mouthfeel. Very dense in texture, near oily body. This BA version is so much better than its original that I wouldn’t even have recognized it as the same beer. The booze is more hidden (though present) and the flavors are way more harmonically balanced and the impact of the barrel fits the bill just right. There’s a universe between the original Black edition and the Calvados edition. In fact, if I hadn’t read it on the blackboard at Mikkeller Bar, I would have guessed this was a beer in the "Black Hole" series rather than just "Black". An extremely well-made barrel aged "big bad" stout; way to go Mikkeller! :-)
