Flavor: rich, intense dark, roasted malt flavors, which takes on espresso coffee, coffee beans, dark chocolate, cacao nibs, supported with strong note of calvados, vanilla and oak. Hop flavors are in the background and takes on stone/dark fruits. Hop bittrness is surprisingly high and lingers long in aftertaste, as alcohol warmth.

375ml bottle enjoyed @ home. Pours pitch black with a tiny and quick fading tan head. Aroma is calvados, overripe apples, dark dried fruits, blueberries, chocolate, earthy, toffee, wood and roasted malt. Flavour is sweet, a little salty and medium bitter. Full bodied, oily texture, almost no carbonation. Finish is damn long, I think I’ll be able to taste it tomorrow. Warming alcohol, dark dried fruits, tangy and quite intense. Black with a decent tan covering.
Nose is rich roast, dark fruits, soy sauce, toffee, earthy rub, grit.
Taste comprises spice, charr, burnt toffee, bitter dark fruit shreds, dates, dark chocolate, wooded notes.
Full bodied, fine carbonation, drying close with a warming alcholic boost.

Farewell Jack bottleshare at Craft Clerkenwell. Opaque black brown beer, small pale tan head. Thin but oh so rich dark malts. Big warming spice. The calvados is light but also spicy. Touch of fresher apple. Spicy dry finish. The thing I like about this version is what it’s not compared to some other versions. It’s lacks that dry ashy dark malt bitterness and for me that is a very good thing. Pretty approachable, all things considered.
Bottle shared during Jack’s leaving drinks. Many thanks to Kenny for this monster. The beer pours oily black with a slight, bubbly brown head. The aroma is all iodine, ash, old blackberries and cocoa. Heavy sweet flavor with prominent alcohol character, more ashy roast, baking cocoa, peat, ripe cherries. Full bodied, chewy, with fine carbonation. Hot finish, with alcohol you can feel in your teeth, with loads of burnt sugars, woody dryness, scorched earth, more ripe dark fruits, berries, burnt honey, some chocolate. Pretty good stuff overall. The calvados has definitely softened the oppressive dry ashiness of base Black, and imparted some tasty fruit characteristics. It’s hard for any beer pushing 20% ABV to be ’drinkable’, but this one is getting close.

Bottle share at CBC Clerkenwell, many thanks to Ken. A monstrous 19.2%. Black, small foamy brown head. Aroma is balsamic vinegar and sherry. Also has some floral and custardy notes that don’t quite meld together. Body is medium, smooth, low carbonation. Taste is very sweet - face contortingly sweet. Some sherry tang. Bottle @ The Clerkenwell Share. Thanks Kenny (?) for sharing this. Deep brown pour with a small tan head. Pretty salty nose. Rich chocolate malt and ashy toasted grain. Plum meat. Tastee is very sweet indeed. Red berry cuts some of the saltiness present in the nose. Chocolate syrup. Thick, sludgy and rich. A bit all over the place. The black series is hit and miss for me. (As Mikkeller Black Calvados Small Batch Edition). Pours matte black with almost no head. Sticking your nose in assault your senses with booze, chocolate, esters, calvados, muscoavado sugar, smoked bacon.. Taste is very intense: dark chocolate, calvados, esters, burnt sugar, honey, smoked bacon. Moutfheel is very oily and compact with no carbonation. Very intense and unbalanced yet quite good - if you sip it slowly.
