375 ml. bottle sampled @ Yarric’s house warming. Thank you! Tried this one after 5 vintages of the regular one & next to 4 other BA versions. The base beer is a very crude best even when good, hugely bitter & alcoholic, raw, age does slightly mellow it out. Some vintages were odd & lightly sour, qualities does vary. While I am not the biggest fan of the base beer, BA editions are beautiful except for the crude peated version which were dreadful. This a bear that can handel lots of barrel & actually needs it in order to smooth out the rough edges which is exactly what happened here. This improved Black without the raw edges with a lovely barrel. Black with a substantial dark very dark mocha head that collapses. Nose is nice warming Cognac, fruity spirit oak, light sweet cognac fruits layered on top of sweetness low umami & roasted qualities of the base. Warming. Taste is lots of warming sugary dark fruits toffee cognac with thick warming roast, both elements oddly work in unison, heavy barrel, burned malts, light umami in the back warming. Crude roast works surprisingly well with the thick sweet barrel. Thick sludge body & softer carbonation. Age is starting to show a bit. This is BBF 03.11.20. Dates to around end of 2010, early 2011. It has held up very well but going by the other version that I tried that evening & have had fresh previously, age has slightly degraded it, it has held up very well. Nice beer.
