Almost black in colour. Bicycle tyre glue in aroma, that mellows as it airs. Sweet and strong taste with some port. A bit woody. Wonderfully complex aftertaste.

(Joined review for Peated & Islay versions). 375 ml. bottle sampled @ Yarric’s house warming. Thank you! Tried this one after 5 vintages of the regular one & next to 4 other BA versions. The base beer is a very crude best even when good, hugely bitter & alcoholic, raw, age does slightly mellow it out. Some vintages were odd & lightly sour, qualities does vary. The BA version with sweet barrels really worked well, they added a necessary sweetness to the beer, this beer can take a lot of barrel. The peated versions on the other hand really do not work for me. Peated version add supper raw medicinal peat it, zero balance, just harsh brutality. It really takes the worst potential roast, the peat carries unpleasant industrial raw medicinal qualities. Brutal in the worst fashion. Islay one is even worse adding a strange sourness which we also found in the 2009 Vintage of the regular (very heavily). I can see how the Peated one can appeal to some people but I fail to see appeal in the Islay version which felt just flawed. Peated one is BBF 15.01.19 & Islay one is BBF27.02.20. I think that 10 years need to be subtracted in order to get the bottling date looking at the other bottles & information that they were bought about 5 years go. Both version look absolutely flat which the others didn’t except for the flawed 2009 Vintage of the regular one (or possibly ravaged by age). Flat motor-oil with no head. Peated one smell like massive harsh umami in a bad way with massive medicinal peat, almost something industrial. Brutal. Taste is same harsh unpleasant overly medicinal seemingly industrial peat, scorched earth, zero complexity, rad bitter roast & bitter unpleasant medicines, massively boozy & pretty much flat. Meh. Isaly version smells even more industrial & peated, even more horrible peat with mild sourness. Taste is rotting sour berries & horribly heavy medicinal & industrial peat, cigarette butts, pretty much flat. Awful. Peated: 2.9/5 & Islay 1.9/5. Vintage from my deep dark cellar ;) It is pitch black with a tiny, creamy dark brown head. The aromas has notes of peat, soot, preserved and dried dark fruits, oak. The mouthfeel is oily and nice. The flavor is sweet with notes of licorice, oak, very mild smoke, dried fruits, dark chocolate and hints of scotch, lovely! GothGargoyle (2588) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - APR 5, 2015
Black with an off-white head. Aroma is smoke, peat, dark fruits, scotch, booze. Full bodied, sticky mouthfeel, sweet and smoky on the palate. Taste is dark fruit, smoke, peaty smoke, dates, plums, fig. Yum! ej (1330) - Hauglandshella, NORWAY - FEB 25, 2015
Bottle shared with BBGTC. Pours a black body producing a small head. Aroma of alcohol, roasted malts and a cloying sweetness. Himts of leather and ash. Taste is sweet and peated. Loads of warming alcohol, roast and peat. Alot better than the original. Body is medium, very soft co2 levels. Lingering sweetness and smokey peat. ClubGonzo (5685) - Bergen, NORWAY - FEB 25, 2015
Bottle, shared with BBGTC. Pours a tar black body with a tiny beige head. Nose is dark chocolate, alcohol, coffee, wood, whisky, smoke, peat and hints of brown sugar and dark syrup. Taste is coffee, alcohol, chocolate, brown sugar, syrup, peat, smoke, wood, whisky and hints of toffee and white sugar. Full, oily body, medium to soft carbonation. The BA versions of this beer are so much better than the regular version, and this is no exception. Nice, but not outstanding and I still prefer the more moderate Black Hole series. bytemesis (9342) - Sunnyvale, California, USA - FEB 24, 2015
Bottle thanks to Alen - 2011 vintage. Pours inky black, small tan to brown head, dissipates fairly quickly with some lacing. Aroma is hugely peaty, scotch whiskey, some roasted malt. Flavor is much the same, quite sweet and light bitter, hugely peaty and smoky, lots and lots of scotch influence here. Medium body. Avoids being meaty. You gotta like scotch, but if you do, this is pretty decent.
