Really didn’t like this at first - the bourbon in the first 10 minutes dominates, devours and crushes all else this beer has to offer. After it warms and opens up however, the bourbon is much less dominate and integrates wonderfully in to a huge beer. Soy sauce, cocoa, vanilla, wood, bourbon. It’s a big sipper with a big body. A beer that almost demands a fine cigar as accompaniment.

Bottle. Pours near black with a beige head. Sweet sweet sweet, with bourbon, roasted malts, fudge, and coffee. Just a bit too over the top.

11 nov 2012, bottle. Black with rocky head. Nose is harsh alcohol, sweet malt, vanilla, and sweet meat. Med body and moderately fizzy. Big, sweet vanilla, oakiness, bitter chocolate, rubbing alcohol. Wow, there's a lot here! Really astringent, dry finish. That's the only bad thing about this. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle shared by Jay at tasting at my house. Pours pitch black with brown head. Nose/taste of whiskey, roasted chocolate malt, burnt chocolate, oak, smoked wood and heavily smoked dark malt. Medium body. A bit boozy in finish, but not overpowering.

Bottle to snifter (thanks alexsdad06). Looks good; a dull black with tan lacing. Smells good too; malt and BOOZE! Tastes like it smells with a good mouthfeel. Damn good beer!

Bottle that I took to James’ place for a tasting. Pours a deep dark black with a large dense tan head that falls and ends up looking like a cafe mocha. Aroma is beautiful, big chocolate, coffee and warm brownies, soft wood and bourbon. A faint touch of cereal grains. Medium bodied, big and warm, but for as big a beer as it is it’s very nice. Smooth, warm brownies, cocoa, a hint of barrel. Absolutely lovely.

Bottle Poirs pith black. Aroma is light poop and delicious bourbon and oak. Mouthfeel is medium with notes of chocolate, bourbon, oak and a ton of heat.

Bottle at home. This is a serious heavy bastard. It pours opaque black with a medium creamy dense brown head. The aroma is huge bourbon, sweet hard roasted malt, smoke, tar, biting hops and alcohol. The flavour is loaded with alcohol and bourbon with some sharp notes of hops. Some smoke and tar. Alcohol is way to profound in the flavour for me.

Foffern (1879) - Bodø, NORWAY - NOV 1, 2012
Bottle shared with Veitafan. Pours a totally black colour with a heavy light brown head. Wow! Heavy aroma of chocolate cake, roasted malt, leather and smoked bacon. The flavour is nothing less with lots of roasted coffee and dark chocolate, some soy sauce and alcohol. Has a very rich and oily mouthfeel, and a medium bitterness. A powerful and fantastic beer!
