500mL bottle, no date, and no idea how/when the hell I got this beer. Hopefully I don’t get mad at Mikkeller for this beer, but at least I can’t get mad at him for overpricing it, since I don’t , know what I paid for it. Clear dark brown pour--black in the glass--with a two finger dark tan head. Charred oak barrels and bourbon (only lightly sweet, not like Angel’s Share [I realize it’s just of 1/2 strength of AS]) up front, but not terribly strong, with a fair amount of chocolate and caramel malts, roasted grain behind. I’m also getting some spearmint from somewhere. Flavor follows, stronger spearmint and ashy roast. I’m not getting as much bourbon in the flavor, however. The finish is semi-dry, burnt and ashy with bitterness peaking at a 3-4. Medium body with the oatmeal lending some lovely smoothness, light carbonation. The spearmint and ashy burnt roast keep me far from loving this beer. Meh, not very enjoyable, and I’m still sure I overpaid for it.

Bottle. tos of soy sauce. Tar. Oil. Not a good nose. Wowe. Blacknlur. Minimal head. Light paper oxidation. Fuck. Bad. Horrible. This is garbage. Just a thin coffee beee with no good barrel character. Sorry I bought this.

Bottle. Black pour with dark head. Roasted, maybe hints of coffee, some bourbon aromas. Flavors are roasted, chocolate, vanilla tones. Probably a better beer fresh.

500ml bottle. Pitch black with brown head. Aroma is rich whisky, wood, dark malts, black chocolate, slight coffee, some licorice and light roasted notes. Taste is roasted malts, booziness, coffee, wood, whisky, coffee, dried dark fruits and light roasted malts. Medium to filling mouthfeel with clear whisky barrel notes, light carbonation and lasting rosted woody whisky aftertaste.

Bottle @ basement beer bar. Aroma of something... Coffee of some kind, a funky and pleasant aroma, chocolate. Black with small brown head. Vir. none lasting. Some bourbon in taste, oak, medium bitterness, light+ sweetness. Medium to full body, smooth texture, soft carbonation, malt bitter finish.

Bottle to glass. Pours a deep brown to black color with a medium brown head. Aroma is a slightly funky coffee, roasted malts, not much bourbon barrel characteristics. Same in the flavor. Heavy roasted malts, coffee, but pretty much nil on the Bourbon barrel. Still tasty nonetheless.

Bottle at 14th Richmond Ratebeer Gathering on 03/19/2011 from Charleston Beer Exchange. Dark black body with a small creamy tan head. Big roast, chocolate and coffee aroma. Sweet roast, chocolate, coffee and light toffee flavor. Medium body with moderate carbonation.

500mL bottle one year before the expiration date, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks Dany), pours black with a medium tan head and lots of sediment. Nose brings out an unusual sweet, licorice-y liqueur character with some weird spice mix upfront above anything, along with a little wood, roasted malt and oats. Flavour is thankfully not along those lines -- at least not the weird dominant liqueur part -- with moderate roasted malt and subdued bourbon characterizing the flavour. The nose puts me off more and more; it’s unfortunate I have to smell it every time I go to take a sip. The depth of the base beer is sadly gone in this version. I’m not sure if this is past its prime or if the barrel aging was supposed to do this, but this doesn’t work for me. A sub-bar Mikkeller beer.

Foffern (1982) - Bodø, NORWAY - MAY 14, 2013
Bottle shared with (and great courtesy of) the Bergen tasting crew. Pours a black colour with a light brown compact coffee-like head. The aroma is sweet and compact with tones of roasted malt, coffee, oak, Irish coffee, syrup and alcohol. The flavour is not far away with the addition some spices, and is pretty complex. Has a rich and smooth mouth feel, and a medium bitterness. A balanced, compact and nice stout. The bourbon is not very distinct though.
