Had this one for breakfast yesterday. Pours a big thick black with huge lasting tan head. Smell is big citrus and pine hops with equally big coffee, chocolate and roastiness. Pungent hop taste being quite bitter, but the stout quality kicks in as well. Chocolate, earthy, coffee. Really nice beer and seems much bigger than your typical black ipa. dumontn (530) - St. Joseph, Michigan, USA - NOV 26, 2011
Pours completely black with light brown rocky head and great retention. Aroma is chocolate cake, some smoke, tons of coffee, hint of licorice, hops are barley noticeable. Taste is chocolate coffee cake with somewhat of an alcoholic roasted smoke note; hoppy but in a resinous and piney way, definetly no citrus action here. Body is full, creamy, bitter (both roasty and hoppy), below average carbonation, dry roasty bitter finish. Overall, pretty good but doesn’t quite measure up to Beer Here’s Dark Hops, which is in my opinion THE benchmark for black IPAs. But then again, this isn’t really a black IPA so much as a strong Oatmeal stout. fiulijn (20427) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - NOV 26, 2011

Black color; small brownish head. Nice coffee aroma, deep; light manure too, and finally some citrusy hops too. The mouthfeel is lean and dry, also because of an extreme presence of heavily roasted malts; with the roasted malts, also ashes and light tar; the final, both for the high bitterness and the burnt malts, is too unbalanced. Difficult.
Bottle kindly shared with my cousin, toffsbury. Pours black black black, 100% opaque, with a brown head. Aroma is amazing - coffee and hops. Very complex taste hops up front, then coffee and more coffee in the finish. Very roasty. Less hops in the taste than the aroma would suggest, which is a shame. But overall a winner if you like you beers very roasty. toffsbury (118) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - NOV 25, 2011
Wonderful aroma of hops and coffee with a note of maltiness. This is a gorgeous pour - nice head, retains for a while and recedes without dissipating entirely, beautiful brown foam and black as night opaque liquid. Can’t see a hint of light through it. Complex flavour - dark roasty coffee, not so much hops in the flavour. Smooth - not quite the smoothness I expect from oatmeal, but nice. Flavour is mostly roasty. Body’s surprisingly lighter than one would expect for something so dark and at 7.5%. QUITE a nice beer. That aroma! It is simply gorgeous.

Purchased at Discount Liquor in Milwaukee. Pours with a generous amount of thick, dense head leaves a beautiful layer of doily-esque lacing. Strong aroma of coffee, butterscotch, caramel, roasty chocolate and some oily hopiness. Hopiness very apparent on first sip; nice bitterness along with a thin coffee roastiness and minerality. More watery in texture than expected after that full smell. Malted, powdery sweetness is faint but a nice undertone. The hops bitterness really dominates, especially in the finish. I can’t really point to anything wrong about the beer, but my own personal preference is for a less watery mouthfeel. Otherwise, the flavors are intense and pretty well-defined. maledictum (778) - Pyongyang, NORTH KOREA - NOV 24, 2011
