A bottle purchased at Ales Unlimited in San Francisco.
I had wanted to try a Mikkeller brew, particularly this barleywine, and I can gladly say that I’ve finally done so.
Labled as an American barleywine, I guess it is though the bottle I had was not overly hoppy as most American barleywines are. There is a hop profile though but it’s not overwhelming. Slightly sweet but not as sweet as some barleywine’s I’ve had. Flavors more pronounced as it warms to room temperature -- raisins on the tongue along with maybe some brown sugar. Not my favorite barleywine but not bad. If I had room in my suitcase to drag more of these back to New Jersey, I would do so. This might improve nicely with a year or two in the cellar.

Glad I had the chance to find a bottle. No telling how old it is but it held up nicely. Nice bourbon and sweet caramel malt aroma. Nice dark brown color of caramelized sugar. Solid and weighty mouthfeel with a smooth finish. Bourbon, burnt sugar and hops all contributed to a well-balanced beer. Reynolds314 (3433) - Connecticut, USA - NOV 28, 2014
I find myself liking a style that I dont like more and more. This barleywine is big and intense witout being boozy or overly syrupy and thats what I want in a barleywine. The barrel characteristics are present and theres vanilla, oak, grapes, raisins, and some nutty malts. FInishes moderately dry and pleasant despite a very slight acrid oxidized metallic note. old bottle, surprisingly balanced, great rich caramel malts and good barrel characteristics still there. A tasty barleywine. slowrunner77 (11911) - Reno, Nevada, USA - OCT 2, 2014
"barrel aging removes any rough edges that existed in the base beer, but also, in this particular beer, dulled the complexity a touch. sweetish raisiny malt and a touch of hops over slight vanilla and peppery bourbon. well done. very smooth for 12%." pours brown amber, medium off white head that dissipates to a head ring. toffee and caramel nose. taste begins sweet with aforementioned notes before the bourbon comes in. mild vanilla. finish is pure unadulterated booze burn. bourbon smoke and vanilla linger on the palate before becoming subdued.
