In Mikkeller we have over the years done many collaboration brews. However, the last one we did was a little unusual we collaborated with the Swedish tattoo studio Crooked Moon. The two brothers Jacob and Jonas Pedersen that run Crooked Moon Tattoo in Helsingborg wanted to celebrate their tattoo studios first birthday with a big party, and what could be more natural than to do it with a beer in their own name? The two brothers have designed the labels for this beer. And therefore this beer comes with two different labels. One by of Jacob, and the other by Jonas. The beer is just like a Crooked Moon tattoo: strong and powerful. In this case we are talking about a violently hoppy double IPA with 9% alcohol. Youll find Crooked Moon / Mikkeller DIPA find on draft and bottled. The picture show the two labels Jacobs label design to the left and of course then, Jonas to the right.En dobbelt india pale ale.
Ingredienser: vand, malt, (pilsner, pale), humle (amarillo, citra, nelson sauvin, simcoe, sorachi ace), og alegr.

Appearance: hazy pale amber with one finger of rocky ivory head, good retention and moderate patchy lacing. (4/5) Aroma: pithy citrus, melon, vinous, stone fruit, floral. (8/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderately strong bitter, mild tart. (8/10) Medium slightly oily body, moderate carbonation, lingering slightly boozy bitter finish. (4/5) A DIPA named after a tattoo parlour? Yeah, OK, sure, why not? Decent complexity with a nice hop/malt balance. (Yeah, I see you there, Nelson Sauvin, dont think I didnt.) And its a sneaky bugger - the 9% ABV doesnt really make its presence know until youre well through the bottle and the room gets a little wobbly. I like this. (16/20)

Bottle. Very hazy golden hue, massive white head that retains well. Sweet peachy hops, strong woody undertones, extremely bitter finish. Boozy and sweet.

From bottle. Pours hazy amber orange with thick head. Floral aroma and delicious sweet, fruity taste (mandarin and vanilla?). Quite strong alcohol finish though with a bitter aftertaste. The only con I can find is, for me, the initial sweetness doesnt blend together too well with the strength and bitterness of the finish. Excellent beer anyway

Bottle to IPA glass Another breakthrough at work, another beer. This could be good...or bad. Grapefruit, orange, light caramel, tropical fruits in the background. If you give it some time, a light pepperiness comes through. Clear amber with a huge 3cm frothy, off white head which had decent retention due to the very active carbonation. Taste is grapefruit and apple with an interesting late funkiness kind of like tropical fruit, but mixed with that overwhelming bitterness.

Plenty of hops, but maybe with more depth than most and a more profound bitterness than most dipas. Fairly complex, really...

Draught at Mikkeller Tokyo. Rich grapefruit character, citrus peel, bit of marmalade, juicy mouthfeel, boozy and spicy notes, long bitter finish. Would sware there is grapefruit juice in it, tasty stuff but a bit too heavy and boozy.

Pours cloudy golden with a large white head. Aroma is citrus, melon with a slight grape hint. Taste is unripened mango, citrus and theres a weird winey sourness involved that I cant really work out before a bitter finish. Bit of a weird one but at the same time I quite like it.

First Mikkeller in over a year. Obviously Im a moron because this is exactly why I used to buy so many. IIPA? I guess so - its a total disaster. This thing is everywhere and nowhere all at the same time and its awesome. Aroma for what I can actually find.. melon, squishy peach candy, amazing flowers and something Ive never smelled before. The taste is very very cool and a complete mess. In la bouche: pineapple, flowers, foreign spice, super fucking bitter, chewy and oily, grass, nearly sourness, melon, huge citrus. Those all sound good but I have no clue on the order of anything. Wonderful flavours placed in totally random order. After taste is an adventure in tolerance. Went from loving this to questioning this to wanting more of this to wondering how much more I can take. Perfect yet kinda wrong - creativity and uniqueness isnt always a winner.
