Bottle courtesy of John, shared at Merton Beer Festival, cheers John, picked up at Jacks, Goring on Thames, Oxon, Friday 24th February Oily texture, shark eye black, bitter and roasty. Meaty aroma, really meaty, meaty and stock in the mouth, thick in the mouth, flavour lingers forever, cognac comes through with some heat, oily legs trail down the glass. Lovely. Svartvit (516) - NETHERLANDS - FEB 21, 2017
Bottle shared at De Gekke Geit tasting. 250ml bottle, 2011(?) vintage. Pours black with a small tan ring. Very smooth malty character, cognac adds a fruity sweetness, caramel, oak, smokey/meaty, a bit of a strange twist to it. Raisins, molasses, berries. Over medium sweet, medium bitter. Over medium body, low carbonation.

Maakun (5393) - The Hague, NETHERLANDS - FEB 21, 2017
Bottle shared thanks to RandomStrangerNL. Black with a dark beige ring. Sweet berries, dark coffee, some vanilla, light horse poop, quite earthy, oxidized notes, port wine, licorice, tar. Quite sweet, medium bitter and light sour. Full bodied. Good stuff but the finish has this weird burning cow dung to it unfortunately.

UPDATED: FEB 8, 2017 Head to head vs. Mikkeller George! BA Calvados, vintage 2013: Pours black oily color, clear, with foamy brown head, which immediately transforms itself to a ring around the glass. Aroma: intense malt aroma, supported with intense Cognac note, hint of vanilla...flavor: intense malt flavor, with notes of coffee, dark chocolate, cacao nibs, vanilla, oak, hint of cinnamon, supported with intense note of cognac, which steps forward in second half. Finish is dry, slightly astringent. Body is full, texture silky smooth, carbonation is low. Both are very, very good, for sure the winner is Bourbon BA😉

VT (2527) - Quebec City, Quebec, CANADA - JUL 14, 2016
250 ml bottle. Pours black with a short lived dark brown head. Aroma is chocolate, plum pudding, figs, umami. Flavor is chocolate, coffee, figs, dates, hazelnut, meat, beef. Finish is chocolate, coffee, oldish, wood. Lingering overripe fruits. Full body, velvety, soft and oily mouthfeel, null carbonation. Very solid!

2.3
Koelschtrinker (20216) - Köln (Cologne), GERMANY - MAY 10, 2016
Cremig malziger, etwas oxidierter Antrunk. Holzig, wenig herb, erstaunlich süffig. Später etwas alkoholisch, geringe Würzigkeit. Insgesamt eher schwach. 9/7/8/7/7/7

4.1
Svesse (8577) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - APR 17, 2016
(Bottle) Pitch black colour with dense, dark brown head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of strong black coffee, cacao, liquorice, treacle, tar, asphalt, black rye bread, oak wood and a touch of cognac. Malty, roasted taste with strong black coffee, cacao, dark chocolate, liquorice, sweet soy sauce, oak wood, cognac and a warming finish with some alcohol, a generous coffee bitterness and a touch of cognac. Full body, quite sweet. Thick and oily texture. Hardly subtle, but very tasty and fairly well balanced (considering it carries a certain punch). Excellent beer!

3.8
Johnsense (1629) - - MAR 25, 2016
Pitch black pour with a nearly equally small black head. Big cognac and roasted malt aroma. Cognac less prevalent in the taste, huge roasted malt note, black coffee, char. Thick oily body.
