This beer is a part of a Single Hop IPA series by Mikkeller. We created this series to showcase hop varieties on their own. This gives the consumer the possibility of smelling and tasting the unique characteristics of each variety and hopefully helping to educate people about the wonderful world of hops. For each beer, the single hop variety was used in the same weight for bittering, aroma and flavor and for dry hopping. All 19 varieties of single hop beers in this series were brewed the same week and with malts from the same batches and the same yeast and fermentation temperatures. This is done to better compare the characteristics of the different hop varieties.

Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of Ungstrup. Pours a clear golden with a lacing off-white head. Lovely, amazing coconut aroma - Sorachi Ace is so distinct. Medium body, some fruitiness but the amazingly complex Sorachi Ace overpowers everything and leaves a tough biterness. I cant help it, but Im totally in love with this hop. 040511

2012-05-14, draught at Mikkeller Bar, Copenhagen, 8-5-7-3-15=38
Hazy amber color, creamy head. Nice Sorachi Ace aroma, more delicate than usual, just a bit soapy and lemony, not pungent; wait some time, because it develops an intriguing floral edge along with the fruits (8 to 9 points). The body seems slimmer than when had it from the bottle, with strong caramel flavor and a touch of darker (but not burnt) malts, that give a bit more dryness in the end; luckily the roasted malts help hiding the typical soap character of Sorachi Ace; there is a light lemony touch, and a lot of hop resins.
Too much caramel for a Single Hop, but a very pleasant beer indeed.

2011-06-11, bottle at P Besk, Malm, 6-4-7-4-13=34
Amber color, hazy; medium sized creamy head. The aroma is initially cheesy; a bit flowery, sweat, maybe fruity. Good caramel flavor, with toffee accent, not too dry (sweeter than earlier Single Hop versions?); good bitterness, but quite a chaos of resins and ripe fruits, not the freshness I would expect from Sorachi Ace; some grapefruit indeed is there. Long final. Good but below expectations, almost unfresh (its probably ~3 months old).
