Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

Draught @ Mikkeler Odense. Pours cloudy dark ruby-brown with airy light tan head. Clear aroma of fruit, malt and yeast, with touches of caramel. Sweetish flavour of malt, yeast and fruit, with touches of caramel and bitter notes of hops and alcohol. Bitter, boozy aftertaste. Well, not bad for the style, I should think. Reasonable but not quite like the big boys within the style.

UPDATED: APR 9, 2018 Bottle. Pours hazy reddish dark brown with large white foamy head. Aroma is malt, port wine, prunes and milk chocolate. Taste is medium sweet, medium bitter, light acidic and faint salty. Body is creamy with fizzy carbonation. Finish is long and rich and mostly sweet.

On bottle @Ølfred - Aarhus Streetfood. Pours deep red, with thick head. Scent: Prunes, dates, figs, brown sugar. Taste: Sugar, a bit alcoholic, quite sweet. Texture: Watery-ish, shorter aftertaste than expected. Great beer, it should just be more intense in the taste.

Color marrón oscuro, rojizo si le da la luz, con capa de espuma de un blanco sucio de dos dedos de grosor y buena retención. Carbonatación media. Textura oleosa y ligeramente chispeante de inicio. Caramelo, recuerdos de especias, azúcar, chocolate difuso y alcohol en aroma. En boca es un poco desastre. Muy alcohólica, como si no hubiera interés alguno en disimular sus 10%. Dulce, con final ligeramente amargo y alcohólico. Caramelo, levadura, toque herbal, especias lejanas, mucho alcohol. Postgusto alcohólico. Que esté en un top 50 de Quadrupel tiene tela.

Bottle. Color: Dark copper, frothy stable beige head. Taste: Roasted malt, medium sweet, grainy, caramel, candy sugar, hints of milk chocolate, red fruit and yeast. Smooth mouthfeel, creamy, no harsh tastes. Well balanced. Lightly boozy hints. Just above medium body, below average carbonation. Nice one.

Aroma sweet malty, fruity esters, caramel, soft alcohol. Dark beer with brown head. Sweet, bready, caramel, prune. Dry finish. Medium body, smooth.

Ciemny brąz, ciemne bordo, refleksy herbaciane, rubinowe, zamglone. Piana beżowa wysoka opada do postaci kożuszka, ładnie oblepia szkło. W aromacie przenika się słodycz słodów i owoców - karmel, winogrona, rodzynki, figa, delikatny kandyzowany cytrus i delikatne nuty chmielowe - zioła, kwiaty. W smaku kwaskowo-deserowo: kwaskowość owoców i słodów, słodycz miodowa, owocowego suszu, nuty czekoladowe. Gorycz chmielowa dobrze zaznaczona ale nie dominuje finiszu. Dobrze ułożone, pijalne mimo wyraźnie rozgrzewającego alkoholu, bez zbędnej mdłości i ulepku. Polecam!

nesten svart farge med beige skum. Lukter alkohol, kaffe og sjokolade. mer mot sjokolade i smak og karamell. brunt sukker. Bitter og sødme i avslutningen.
