750ml bottle. Pours a deep brown color with a quickly disappearing tan head. Boozy aroma, full of citrusy fruits and sweet chocolate, with a roasted nuttiness. Silky smooth body reveals a very sweet, malty beer. Hints of chocolate and coffee with a hint of sourness in the sticky sweet finish. Good, but not outstanding.

I bought this from South Bay D&Ls. Thanks Joey!

This pours from red foiled, caged and corked 750ml bottle(2007) a pitch black..ok, there's just the slightest hint of some reddish highlights, with a 2 finger head of tan foam that shrank quickly to a solid and stubborn 1" head with some nice lacing.

The smell is all malty and fruity with notes of caramel, dark fruit, some spice, and a touch of alcohol.

The taste is very sweet. Good caramel malt along with some very nice fruity flavours of raisin, plum, cherry(?) or is it strawberry or maybe both? Anywho, it's a very fruity beer and I'm liking it.

A few more sips in and the spice starts to be more assertive with flavours of nutmeg, cinnamon, and something else that's on the sweet side. I can also taste some anise but it's done lightly and, imo, nicely. Very very tasty; much more so than I would have guessed from the smell. And what of the 11%abv? Yet *another* brew that does one hell of a job of hiding its strength. Well done!

Mouthfeel wise, I'd say it's medium light, the carbonation is light, and it finishes as fruity as it starts. Very drinkable and I think it's a wonderful offering for the festive season but to be honest, I could drink this *any* time of the year. ;^)

Bottom line: A truly satisfying BSDA that kept my interest from first sip to last swallow and if you like spicy and fruity examples of the style, don't pass this one up!

Unde (1160) - Helsinki, FINLAND - MAY 21, 2014
Black and brown colour, with no head to speak of, only big bubbles come up after pouring. Aroma has red wine, dark chocolate, berries, roasted malts and some winter spices. Taste is sweet with chocolate, anise and other spices and some berries too. Full and oily body but carbonation had gone from this bottle. Slight disappointment, but for a 7 year-old beer this did pretty well.

Nuffield (4202) - Roseville, Minnesota, USA - MAR 15, 2014
A few hints of vintage qualities but on the whole this has matured remarkably well. Sweet, quite sweet, with molasses and a hint of spice, but a deep, dark body with lots to love. Bottle.

Backlog rating 1-24-2009 (Bottle) This beer pours a small tan head with good retention, very little lacing, opaque body, and a brown hue. The Aroma is caramel, chocolate, yeast, and alcohol. The Taste is sweet, chocolate, alcohol, malty, and fruit esters. The Palate is tingly and this is a light-medium bodied beer. All-in-all, this beer is very quaffable, very tasty, worth trying, and I recommend this beer.

wedgie9 (2703) - Nashville, Tennessee, USA - JAN 29, 2012
Tasted in October 2011 from a corked and caged 750mL bottle shared at a tasting. Pours opaque dark brown with a bubbly lace collar, but no real head. The nose is quite nice, with dark chocolate, marshmallow, black strap molasses, and licorice. The flavor is not quite as nice, with some charred licorice, fruity molasses, and dark chocolate, with some nutty oxidation starting to set in. The body is full with nearly no carbonation and a long dark chocolate and molasses finish.

Lebkuchen-Geruch. Süßer Beginn mit Kräuternoten, hefig, etwas oxidiert. Nicht ganz rund, zuckrig, röstig, deutliche Holznoten. Zum Ende hintergründig alkoholisch, etwas Vanille. /10/9/9/9/9

75 cl bottle @ Olutravintola Pikkulintu

Sweetish and somewhat light aroma has raisins, licorice, berries and some roastiness. Dryish palate. Flavour has licorice, some brown sugar, spices and raisins. Some signs of alcohol that do not disturb. Palate becomes sticky after one small glass. Good.
