Bottle shared at CBC Islington - London. Many thanks to Josh! Pours deep brown with a tight, creamy beige head. Nose holds sugary chocolate, light roast, burnt wood, dark fruits. Medium to big sweet flavor with lots of dark fruits, gooey chocolate, some burnt bread, soft roast, raisins, some burnt toffee. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming finish with some charred wood, sweet chocolate, some alcohol, lots of dark and ripe fruits. Delicious beer.

Draught at Ølbaren, Copenhagen
Dark color, almost black; small creamy beige head. Delicate aroma of roasted malts, light dark chocolate too. Smooth mouthfeel; caramel and mild chocolate flavor (not the nice dark chocolate), traces of vanilla and in the final hints of liquorice.
Balanced but confusing.

Bottle at the Cask, Pimlico - 14/12/12. Very dark mahogony brown with a thin head. Nose is booze, dark fruits, leather, spice, Belgian yeast esters. Taste follows, boozey - but well balanced, dark fruits, sugars, dark toffee, spice, yeast esters a la Beglique. Full bodied with soft carbonation with a boozy dark fruit finish.

mcberko (18979) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - DEC 30, 2012
750mL bottle, pours a near-black with a medium tan head. Aroma of Xmas spices, burnt caramel, some burnt cocoa and some charred malt. Flavour follows the burnt aromatics, with burnt molasses, some sherry-like oxidation, burnt caramel and a bit of a smoky quality. Quite heavy, burnt and somewhat spicy. The burnt qualities work well actually. Great stuff.

UPDATED: FEB 1, 2014 750ml bottle (Drink Shop, Tallinn)
Pungent hoppy aroma, very raw - seems like it might appreciate some ageing, lots of orange peel. Quite different in the taste, this one is ready to drink now, unlike previous SLHs I’ve had young, despite the clues the aroma gave. Nice rich roasty body. Smooth palate, nice carbonation. Mellow roasty finish. Look forward to trying one with a little bit of age on it too. 6-12 months would be good, I guess.
Rerate: 750ml bottle - 15 months aged.(7+:5:7+:4:14=3.7++)
Beautiful aroma, sweet, very gently spiced belgian strong dubbel to almost porter roast. Lovely black, small tan head. Spicey estery retronasals, great roast nice and toasty. Nice little burnt finish, and some nice biting noble hops. Mellow rich roast finish, fills out very nicely
