3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured during the local shop’s weekly beer tasting, so this is based on only a 1oz sample. Lots of malt, almost like drinking a liquor, alcohol is very apparent. It is however smooth rather than harsh on the palate.
Bottle 750ml (2013) – cellared for 3 years. Served at room temperature. Pours a deep, dark, hazy brown (virtually black). Head is large, dense, tanned and lasts superbly. Aroma is rich and complex with strong notes of Pedro Ximenez, muscatels (strong), burnt caramelized dates (strong), dark cherries, burnt caramel, chocolate fudge, treacle and Christmas pudding spices. Flavour is extremely smooth and slightly vinous with a light toasted bitterness; sultana’s (strong), toasted date loaf, stewed plums, burnt caramel, ruby port, rum and raisin chocolate, golden syrup (light) and some mixed spices (ginger/cinnamon/allspice) in the finish. Full bodied with light carbonation, an oily texture and a long warming finish. AWESOME Christmas ale! jmgreenuk (10004) - Kuala Lumpur, MALAYSIA - FEB 27, 2016
Tap at Mikkeller Bangkok. 10.9%. Poured a reddish dark brown with a round white head and a little lace. The aroma is earthy sweet malt, alcohol. The flavour is moderate sweet with a big rich red berry fruit, spicy Christmas pudding, alcoholic palate. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation. knasputte78 (661) - SWEDEN - JAN 30, 2016

Aroma: Smell of spices, chocolate and coffee, dark dried fruits and grape-fruit peel.Fredis23 (568) - Hickory Hills, Illinois, USA - JAN 2, 2016

Taste: Starts sweet with dark syrup, burnt crust, figs and raisins, citric peel.
Palate: Medium carbonation, a soft texture. A medium body with a slightly dry finish.
Overall: Felt thinner this year.

UPDATED: DEC 31, 2015 En bouteille. Couleur brune reflet rubis, belle mousse beige. Apparence style dubbel. Scent: subtle dark fruits. Raisin. Rum. Very small cinnamon
Appearance: disappointing. I realize this beer is two years old but my first glass was completely full of what looks like yeast. sentiment. I mean literally the glass is full of it. Maybe I got. Bad bottle
Front of the mouth: rum. Dark fruits. Slight alcohol bite
Middle of the mouth. Slight bitterness. Raising dry breadiness
Finishes dry but does not necessarily leave me wanting more. Overall not a memorable beer. mzaar (3643) - Varberg, SWEDEN - NOV 6, 2015
Flaska. Oklar nougatfärgad öl med ett medelstort smutsvitt skum. Dofter av smörkola, karamell, grapefrukt, läder och trä. Detsamma återkommer i smaken. Hade trott och hoppats att efter två års lagring skulle det ha blivit mer komplext och med mer tyngd. Men i själva verket känns det aningen tunt trots 10,9 % och smakerna spretar lite. Tap at Fairbar. Black body with nearly no head. Sweet, fruity aroma. Sweet taste with light bitterness. Flavours of spice and dried fruits. Medium body with average carbonation. Very tasty beer. In many ways similar to Gouden Carolus Noël, but not as rich and flavourful. Still worth seeking out, though. drjoeng (1380) - SINGAPORE - OCT 7, 2015
10.9%ABV. Belgian Strong Ale.
Poured out of the bottle a clear brown black, again I cannot resist the comparison to a local drink of grass jelly, chin chow. 30-35ºSRM.
Nose is fruity and refreshingly herb-like. Again, there is that reference to chin chow where the nose is a clean light sugary aroma with a cold character to it that suggests a refreshing herbal or even medicinal aroma.
Mouthfeel is light and playful. The name should say it all, since the palate is dominated by Christmas flavors, nutmeg, cinnamon, rum, fruitcake, walnuts, pecans, sweet sherry, sweet date cake, cranberries and even a suggetion of christmas turkey fom the umami that the wheat gives this brew. All this hyperbole of course rests on a backbone of perfectly roasted dark sweet malt Very expertly done. Wouldn’t expect any less from Mikkeller.
A very well balanced, spicy homage to the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.
I don’t generally like spicy brews relegating them to the "gimicky" pile and I want so badly to gove this Mikkeller a place on The List, but it will have to stay on the "interesting" pile for now.
