2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
My bottle label is some kind of abstract shades of brown as opposed to the image shown here, but apparently it’s the same inside. I should note that I think Mikkeller is an over-hyped, over-priced POS...at least in my experiences. However, I really like the idea of their single hop taste test with 19 hop varieties. So, let’s taste armadillo hops.
Aroma is, well...apparently what amarillo hops smell like, very piny. Appearance is a muddled brownish orange with sediment. Large head quickly dissipates. Taste is woody, chalky, and gamey if that makes sense to you. If this is a good representation of amarillo hops, I can cross them off my like list. Does this make the beer bad? Well, yes and no. Bad to me, because I apparently don’t care for amarillo hops. And since I use this site as a diary for ME and MY beer tastes...sorry Mikkeller, you get yet another bad check from me. However, I applaud your series idea and only wish the other 18 were available and damn it to hell wish they weren’t $9 a sample.
The taste is amarillo, and it´s great... in the beginning, then like other single hops, boring in the end. Gurthnar (6080) - Bratislava, SLOVAK REPUBLIC - AUG 23, 2017
Can at 100 piv. Moderate caramelly maltiness on par with the hops - which means uncomfortable strong here, obstructive. The hops could use more crispiness, juiciness. Also not tyical Amarillo, rather vaguely citrusy fruity. Only lightly zesty. Good but not great. FatPhil (16647) - Tallinn, ESTONIA - AUG 20, 2017
Tap at Alus Celle (RBESG2017 (5+:3:6+:3:13=3.0)klm1 (1733) - Bled/SF, - AUG 18, 2017
Bright gold. The aroma isn’t huge and is mainly of caramel and
generic fruit. Some herbal elements in the taste alongside sweet
fruitness, which make it a bit more interesting. This does have
reasonable drinkability, without the harshness of the taps’ other
Mikkeller Amarillo offering. Unusually, Phil didn’t have this.
Pours golden, slightly hazy with foamy white head. Aroma: intense hop profile with citrusy, floral character. Flavor follows aroma: intense hop profile with notes mentioned above and biscuity, gentle toffee (almost caramel) like malt character. Hop bitterness is high, finish dry, long lasting bitter. Body is medium, texture soft, carbonation is medium. Marduk (8061) - Reval, ESTONIA - AUG 2, 2017
Tap (Alus Celle, Riga) as "Mikkeller Amarillo IPA". Clear golden color. Medium size, beige head, stays. Citrus, fruity, caramel in aroma. Citrus, caramel, bubblegum and herbal hops in taste. Citrusy hops in aftertaste. Medium bitterness. Drinkable brew.

Amber bit hazy with medium off-white head
. Malt and hops aroma. Good hops bitterness with fruity sourness and slight malty sweetness. Lasting bitter aftertaste. Cuso (8842) - Bratislava, SLOVAK REPUBLIC - JUL 9, 2017
Bottle from 100 piv. Dark orange golden color with thick white head. Strong citrus hoppy aroma with oranges, tangerines, zest, pines. Taste, starts malty, followed by nice citrus hoppy bitterness with oranges, grapefruits, zest, pines, honey. Long, fruity, hoppy bitter finish. Nice. Unde (1115) - Helsinki, FINLAND - JUN 28, 2017
Beautiful orange looks with thick and foamy head on top which leaves some lacing too. Aroma is quite malty, pines and grapefruit with grass undertones. Taste is bitter with grapefruit and ends with dry pines and grass. Caramel sweetness to balance the bitterness as well. Medium to full body and medium carbonation. Well single hop is only just a single hop.
