A - Hazy golden-orange with a finger of frothy slightly off-white head. Fades normal. S - Grapefruit, citrus, pine, and grassy hops, sweet wheaty and caramel malts, buckwheat, and a bit of booze. T - Sweet wheat and caramel malts, grapefruit, orange, citrus, grassy, and pine hops, some lightly resiny bitterness, some buckwheat, and a bit of booze. M - Full bodied, moderate carbonation. Smooth with a sweet, dry, bitter, and warming finish. D - Nicely balanced wheatwine. Great hop profile and hop-malt balance throughout.

750ml bottle (thanks FatPhil). Clear redish copper color. Huge size, frothy beige head, stays. Booze, sweet, caramel, raisins, plums and weird chemical notes in aroma. Sweet, alcohol, plums, flourish and chemicals in taste. Sweet and boozy in aftertaste. Weird chemical feel is disturbing, but otherwise drinkable brew.

The buckwheat version in this popular series of barleywines made by Mikkeller and Three Floyds at Flanders' Proef. From a 75 cl bottle bought at Gedeelde Vreugde in Sint-Niklaas. Very thick, whipped cream-like, cobweb-lacing, moussy, egg-white, yet fairly quickly thinning head; misty peach blonde colour with warm amberish tinge, lightly hazy but misty and more ochre-ish with sediment. Aroma of marmelade, mandarin peel, soggy sandwiches, baker's yeast, sweet cicely, carraway seed - could be the buckwheat actually, pineapple, dried apricot, cream, old blanket, dried basil, yellow raspberry, banana. Very fruity, rather estery flavour, banana, peach and ripe pear notes, sweetish with a lingering residual 'white' sugariness to it, laying a honeyish layer over a rounded, medium carbonated, bit fluffy, bready malt body with subtle spicy and grainy sides to it which doubtlessly represent the buckwheat; ends a tad phenolic (cloves) with more 'colourful' spicy notes (sweet cicely, vague aniseed perhaps) as well as some 'orangey' freshness; yeasty aspects linger alongside a mild herbal hop bitterness and warming, 'jenever'-ish alcohol. Feels very 'Belgian' actually, almost sweet tripel-like more than actually barleywine-like, for which it would need a more vinous and more clean character; that said, a rich, desserty beer for sure, adorned with some subtle but delicate aromatic spicy notes. I liked the Risgoop perhaps a bit better, though.

On tap at Beer Tenpel, Amsterdam: Comes with a red-brown color and a small off-white head. Dry and hoppy nose with some candied or dried fruits. Taste is fruity and hoppy, warm malty flavours with wooden influence. Nice bitter dry finish.

750ml bottle. Pours reddish brown colour. Quite high beige head. Hints of toffee, notes of plums and creeks, hints of sherry, sourness in the aroma. Very delicate. Berriful beginning with notes of toffee. Notes of caramel in the middle. Notes of sherry as well. Toffee and berries in the end. Nice soury touch as well. Really well balanced, silky, moderately carbonated barley wine. Very good one.
