COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Colony Oatmeal Stout Colony Oatmeal Stout used to be just a winter seasonal brew when it first was introduced back in 1996. But since then popular demand has made it into an all year affair. The ’oatmeal’ in the name is due the 10% oatmeal in the the grist of this brew. Oats give beer a real thick mouthfeel, something definitely desirable in a stout! Black malt and roasted barley give the beer its color, and coffee-like flavors. If you like thick full-bodied stout, this beer is for you!

DrnkMcDermott's rating

   AROMA 8/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 5/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 11/20
DrnkMcDermott (3100) - Downers Grove, Illinois, USA - MAY 10, 2004
UPDATED: MAY 18, 2007 Bottle. I emailed the brewery and they suggested the off taste came from the fact that I had an 8-month old bottle; since they don’t pasteurize their beer, that’s past its prime. I will definietly buy more fresh beer and revise my rating at a future date. Starts out really nice. Beautiful roast coffee smell when opened. Pours a deep black body under a thin tan head. Taste is very roasty, too, but I also get the big sour orange taste other raters mentioned, followed by a punch of Coca-cola. Taste does settle out to a nice creamy oatmeal stout, but the sour cola gets in the way. How could they got such a taste with a lager yeast?

UPDATED: JUL 11, 2017 12oz bottle. Pours black with a humongous pale tan head. Aroma is raisins, grain, light molasses, and wet leaves. Taste is roast, metal, some dull chocolate, and a faintly caramel sweetness. Oatmeal doesn’t really come through. Decently bitter. Fairly light bodied. Moderate but too astringent carbonation. Thin, foamy mouthfeel. From the bottle, the mouthfeel is sudsy and unbelievable bad - Palate’s a 2 when poured, 1 from the bottle.

It seems a little light in body, but has a great flavor. Strong roasted coffee flavor. Nice brown head formation on a black beer. Retains its head. Good finish hop. Little or no nose hop. Aroma of roasted barley. Could have more smoothness from the oats.

Bottle: Black, with a large, dark tan head. Chocolate, raisin-oatmeal aroma. Taste is mildly tangy....chocolate malt, oats.... A little too lactic. Not bad.

Definitely a product of a bad brewery getting bad ratings on a good beer just because of who they are. Aroma was roasty and big chocolate, clean. Flavor similar, nice clean oatmeal stout id be happy to drink anytime.

Draft at Iowa Taproom, De Monies. 3-16-2016,from notes. Raven feather black color, no head when it arrived at the table. The aroma is bitter chocolate, some grain and chocolate notes. The flavor is bitter chocolate, weak roast and a bit of sugar. Nice dry finish with a somewhat smooth mouthfeel. This breweries standard stout offering. Really weak in the body category. Not bad just very ordinary.

On tap. Rich opaque black hue breaking mahogany on the edges. Thin white head that has minimal lacing. Nice chocolate aroma and taste that has a nice amount of sweetness. Mild earthiness and hazelnut in the finish. Mouthfeel has a silly texture. Very good.

Pours black with very tan to brown head that quickly dissipates. The aroma, caramel, sour, coffe, and small amounts of roast. The flavor is caramel and sweet up feont followed by roasty, coffee, and some chocolate. Leaves a sour or astringent flavor at the end. Body is a but sweet and thick. Overall think if it had more flavors up front.

Appearance and aroma are perfect. Malt with some astringent off flavors. Light Carmel. Tangy. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours deep brown with a medium tan head. Mouthfeel is a bit watery for me, but its got a lot of nice chocolatey sweetness.
