This amber lager has a slightly coppery hue that is rather lovely. Gotta love that even, robust head, too. The aroma hints at warm caramel and slightly smoky malt. The taste reveals a lot of sweetness that’s tempered by some nuttiness. I feel that lagers like this are often overlooked. While an amber lager doesn’t have the same flavor profile or complexity of an ale, good lagers should have a spot in every beer lover’s heart. This one is definitely worthy of consideration. Schild Brau may not blow your mind, but it’s a solid example of the style. JFGrind (2047) - Glenside, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 16, 2002
After pouring the beer the yeasty aroma told me I was in for a treat. The beer had the malt flavor I enjoy and reminded me of a euro Oktoberfest. By far the best thing I’ve ever experienced to come out of Iowa. heemer77 (5358) - Urbandale, Iowa, USA - NOV 10, 2003
UPDATED: MAR 30, 2005 Good thing I live close to the Amana Colonies. Has an aroma of walnuts and some muted apples. The taste is light with a little bit of bread and caramel. Has a cheesy aftertaste on tap. Lively carbonation in the mouth. Smooth and has little head when ordered on tap. In the bottle, I find the taste to be more subtle and refined. Nice beer. Not a bad beer, for a bottled beer. It woulld probably rate higher had I not just come from Onopa Brewery and sampled some incredible beers, but this is still good. anderiv (3) - St. Paul, Minnesota, USA - JAN 9, 2004 does not count
Wow - surprising taste for the style. The first sip provides a tart mouthfeel, which is quickly taken over by the heave malt. Very smooth and exceptionally drinkable!

Very nice amber red color with a small tan head. The aroma is a bit nutty and sweet with faint fruit tones, mostly apple, present. It’s sweet and medium bodied and there is a nice carmel malt bill that is quite smooth. A somkey/nuttyness is lingering in the mouth a bit, making this a good beer overall. Make sure you don’t drink it too cold, because it gets better as it warms. craven5000 (120) - Westville, Indiana, USA - SEP 2, 2004
A darker amber color under the off while head. The big head dies quickly. A slightly earthy aroma. A nice full mouth feel but not heavy. At first, it is slightly sweet and malty. Then, the tartness comes out. The brew goes down easy and has a pleasant after taste. iabeerguy (392) - Iowa, USA - JAN 29, 2010
This beer pours a nice red color with a small head. Aroma of malts, hops, fruit, and caramel. Nice lacing around my glass. Flavor is of malts and caramel. Finish is nice and smooth. A very enjoyable beer. wlajwl (6809) - Quad Cities, Iowa, USA - FEB 3, 2011
Good malt heft to it, one of the least flashy beers out there, but doesn’t mean that the beer isn’t good. DuchessOfIowa (161) - Iowa, USA - JUL 7, 2015
Out of the bottle dated June. Dark amber/copper hue with a small amount of haze, white head with medium lacing. Nutty with caramel notes and a hint of smoke on the finish. Mouth feel is crisp with some decent carbonation. Sweetness in the beginning finished with an earthy mild bitterness. Very pleasant overall roasted malt flavor and balanced example of style.
