GIJOE (1220) - North Berwick, Maine, USA - APR 26, 2013
Marketed as Boatswain for Trader Joe’s.
Strong cocoa nose that dominates, nearly masking the malt.
Sweet flavor - almost too sweet for me. It would be good with dessert.
Creamy mouth-feel. Mild carbonation.
Pretty standard chocolate stout. Nothing spectacular. tympanic (168) - New York, New York, USA - APR 13, 2013
From Trader Joe’s, sold as Boatswain Chocolate Stout. Here in NYC, we have the excellent Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, which I consider the standard for the style. This brew comes nowhere near that standard in richness of flavor, alcohol content (I want more), or robustness of palate. The previous sentence is under review. It was $2.29. Type: 22-oz. bomber
Glass: Manzanita pint glass
From: Trader Joe’s in La Mesa (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: April 4, 2013
Consumed: April 6, 2013
Poured a pitch black color with 1-2 fingers of brown head. Light foamy, foggy lacing on the sides. Good retention all the way down.
Smelled dark cocoa, coffee beans, butter and smoky firewood, almost an ashtray.
Got a sharp taste of extremely bitter coffee notes right away. That bitterness lingered on the tongue for quite some time. Still dark cocoa and that smoky fire and ashtray.
Full-to-medium body. Creamy-to-oily texture. Average-to-lively (above average) carbonation. Long, bitter finish.
A bit too smoky, but it was actually better than I thought it would be. And for $1.99 what more can I ask for? b3shine (8925) - Indiana, USA - APR 6, 2013
Bomber to oversized snifter (shared with the Mrs.; thanks jtclockwork). Looks solid; cola with a bit of beige head that quickly dissipates into lacing. Smells of dark malt, roast, and chocolate. Tastes like it smells, only better, with a nice, smooth mouthfeel. Enjoyable. Arayaga2 (2199) - portland, Oregon, USA - APR 3, 2013
Opaque brown black with 1.5" of dimpled, light brown head. Aroma is cocoa and light malt. Taste is the same, but bordering on acrid, with a sharp bark component. Rather light overall. $2.20

Pours deep brown into a snifter. Mocha head with little retention recedes to skim surface leaving scant spiders. Sour chocolate aromas. Dry with sour citrus and chocolate upfront turning to sour espresso and smoke in the lasting finish. jrodooo5 (1680) - DOVER, Delaware, USA - MAR 31, 2013
Pours dark chocolate w/ a nice mocha head that leaves no lacing. The aroma is a little light for a stout which is fitting because if there was such a thing as a light stout, this would b it. It’s highly drinkable & has some nice subtle chocolate flavor. Pretty tasty & not bad overall. Suttree (6415) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - MAR 31, 2013
As "Boatswain Chocolate stout". Black, big tan head. Smells chocolatey, toasty, and a hint of coffee. Taste is chocolatey, as well, but something seems a bit...off, somehow. odd medicinal or even boozy note. Not terrible, but not as good as it could be. queenholly (3623) - South Whitley, Indiana, USA - MAR 30, 2013
Bottle. Chocolate syrup, mocha, and smoky aroma. Black brown with a small tan head. Chocolate, roasty malt, and slightly smoky flavor. Light body, soft carbonation. shrubber85 (11448) - Greenville, Indiana, USA - MAR 29, 2013
Bottle. Smoke and chocolate syrup aroma. Dark brown with small head. Sweet chocolate syrup and roasted barley malt flavor. Light hint of hay in the finish. Not bad.
