Joy of Joys! The third in the dart tournament contest. A solid chocolate stout. Sweet and full bodied. Nose of cacao and bakers chocolate. Subtle hop finish for me. Evidently aliased to Trader Joe’s. Especially economical. GenDV138 (7284) - Falls Church, Virginia, USA - OCT 4, 2015
22 oz bottle as Boatswain Chocolate Stout, poured into a tulip pint glass. Dark brownish black with two fingers of nice tan head. Aromas of maple syrup, milk chocolate, roasty notes. Tastes of milk chocolate, light roasty notes, vanilla. Medium-light body with a dry finish. Not bad for two bucks. ContemplateBeer (2089) - Louisville, Kentucky, USA - AUG 30, 2015
650 ML bottle from Trader Joes; labeled as "Boatswain Chocolate Stout." $2.49 for this big bottle. Aroma: Cocoa powder is most prevalent along with some very light roasty notes; it’s fairly one dimensional all around but not offensive. Appearance: Thin, dark garnet brown pour with a sticky mocha head that settles into a creamy skin. Flavor: More caramel than cocoa up front, and all around; anything resembling cocoa or roast character is dialed back; the finish dries up well. Palate: Light body, slick texture, soft carbonation, abrupt finish. Overall: It’s pretty unimpressive, but not undrinkable, either. Of course, it’s a bargain, and probably best reserved for those moments when you need a quick stout fix, or you are far enough into your drinking session for flavor and execution not to matter much anymore. UPDATED: AUG 26, 2015 A bomber for $2.50 @ trader joe’s. Mine said boatswain chocolate stout. Personally I like name bunny stout better. Beautiful darker beer pour. Smell is a tad metallic. Taste is perhaps a little ruder than expected but it certainly has an ashy stout kick to it. Not sure if I like the hop bitterness presented here. Good buy any day for a beer of this quality.

Bottle as boatswain from trader joes. Deep brown, my same was a bit flat having been opened awhile, so I won’t rate on head or carb. Aroma malty chocolate, dark fruit and raisin, bread. Taste chocolate, raisin, a little molasses and coffee at the finish. Not too sweet even. Palate is ok, could be heavier, but it’s not watery. I agree with other eaters. Pretty good for the price! kvv104 (34) - - AUG 3, 2015
Boatswain chocolate stout. Pour black. Nice aroma. First taste is of chocolate but quickly turns into a weird aftertaste that last. Aggiebob (1127) - Huntsville, Alabama, USA - AUG 2, 2015
Bottle. Dark brown with tan head. Expresso and chocolate aroma with caramel added to the flavor as well. Very well balanced. tnkw01 (1753) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - JUL 17, 2015
Bottle. First off, I love chocolate and I love chocolate beers. This one was "Boatswain Chocolate Stout" from Trader Joe’s. Deep, dark brown almost black. No head. Aroma was burnt grains and chocolate. Taste was bitter dark chocolate, coffee and roasted grains. Nice. blackmurder (236) - Whitaker, Oregon, USA - JUL 10, 2015
For the price you can’t do better. Seriously, I challenge you do find a better chocolate stout for $2.39 in the Pacific Northwest. Taste is very heavy on the chocolate, somewhat similar to Rogue’s offering, but honestly I like this one better. Carbonation is light, which is fitting for this beer. I didn’t bother to poor it, just swigged it right out the bomber. A fine beer for the price.
