This is a very flavorful beer with a delightful chocolate nose and initial flavor and a roasted malt finish. If you are a fan of this style of stout, you must try this one. mrossini (34) - - FEB 2, 2014
I have it as boatswain chocolate stout. This is a very smooth stout. If you are not yet a fan of dark beers, this is a great one to get started with! scrizzz (2223) - Bothell, Washington, USA - FEB 26, 2012
Enjoyed via trader joes for 2 bucks. Some rich dark cocoa on the nose with form dark coffee. Clean black, thinnish body, mocha head. Amazing balance of dark grain, chocolate, and coffee. I’m serious. Such a deal! ffbot (420) - Oakland, California, USA - APR 6, 2016
uh, am I crazy to give this a high rating??? Look is abstract brown, thin tan head. smell is rich milk chocolate, small coffee, and some malt. Taste is pure f’n milk chocolate. Exactly as sweet and bitter as. yesyouam (1016) - Fairport, New York, USA - MAY 5, 2013
Boatswain Chocolate Stout is a black ale with a slightly reddish cast. The smooth, dense, brown head has decent retention. It has a roasted aroma with notes of coffee, dark chocolate and toffee. It feels smooth and full bodied with a clean, dry finish. A little grit is left on the teeth. There’s a hint of sweetness, but it’s dry overall. The chocolate flavor is very dark and pretty subtle. There’s a bit of caramel going on mid-taste. The chocolate is probably most prominent in the dusty aftertaste. The bitterness is very subdued and is just enough to balance things out. This is a very solid, drinkable and enjoyable stout.

Joy of Joys! The third in the dart tournament contest. A solid chocolate stout. Sweet and full bodied. Nose of cacao and bakers chocolate. Subtle hop finish for me. Evidently aliased to Trader Joe’s. Especially economical. yackery (168) - California, USA - JAN 27, 2012
22oz bottle of Boatswain Chocolate Stout. Satisfyingly persistent brown sandy head and fast covering lacing over a deeep red body that barely passes light. Delicious roast chocolate and wood with notes of ripe sour fruit like cherries, and berries and semi-sour fruit like nectarine, peaches and plums aroma with a hint of smoke.
Taste is salty, sweet, and bitter carrying the chocolate most excellently. Body is medium and not light. Texture is thick and creamy. Carbonation is not quite but almost as full as cola. Finish is long and bitter.
Overall a great find for the price at Trader Joe’s.

Scored this beer for under $3 at a local grocery store. There is a slight chocolate aroma, but not much. Tasted is a solid stour with a good chocolate presence, but nothing overwhelming. Overall for the price this is a very solid beer, I’ve actually purchased this one a few times now. It’s a great buy when your looking for a solid beer without having to dish out too much dough. novajeepfreak (1) - Virginia, USA - JUL 8, 2012 does not count
I had this as a "Boatswain Chocolate Stout".....Aroma is chocolaty/coffee, not much head but that’s fine. I love dark beers so that’s the reason for my high appearance number. Black in color, head is caramel in color. Taste is sweet, I’d say medium. Light bitter finish. The body is medium with creamy texture, I would say average on the carbonation with a slightly bitter but not bad finish. I really enjoyed this beer. I got it a Trader Joe’s, price was right and I love dark beers so figured what the heck....I’ll be getting what they have in stock....
