Geez! Three re-directs from "Boatswain Chocolate Stout" to get to this page. Anyway, $2/bomber at Trader Joe’s. Big rocky foam pour in my Nonick. Smell does have some coffee and chocolate overtones. Appearance is solid black with brown foam. Taste is pretty nice. Some cocoa on on the front, but in the back is the bitterness of coffee roast that does little more than hold the taste rating to a 6. Well, the label actually admits to 66 IBU, which is kind of high for a Stout. Had they cut the hops back and let it finish a tad sweeter, it could be a nice chocolate stout. Maybe a little low on the rating side, but I’d have no trouble recommending this as a good $2 bomber!

Can from Trader Joe's as 'Boatswain'. Dark brown in colour, with a thin, beige, head. An easy drinking sweet stout, with plenty of milk chocolate character and a gentle finish. Fine.

Pour from a 12oz can, single from Trader Joe's. Inky dark brew with tan head - held an LED flashlight up to the glass and it was invisible. That's inky! Aroma is weak toasted grain, not much else. Taste is modest sweet malt up front with some toasted grain, Some cocoa in the middle and a bit more roast with a little coffee at the end. Aroma and taste are both pretty restrained and simple, though what is there is enjoyable. OK but not a standout.

bottle from Trader Joes. Deep brown with small head. It was cheap, and I had low expectations given the other Boatswain beers I've had. Rather thin, light cocoa. A bit hot, despite the relatively low ABV. I wouldn't exactly recommend this, but it was better than some of their other beers.

the description actually nails this one "This beer pours a dark brown with a moderate tan head and smell of toasted coffee and light cocoa. It has a pronounced roasted coffee flavour with slightly sweet cocoa notes concluding with a subtle, well balanced, hop bitterness." smooth finish with only light bitterness...got from Juli at SWANA 2017 but drank later at home

Six pack of cans under the Boatswain Chocolate Stout label. Can to cup. Chocolate and smoke aroma, taste is more brown than stout. Hay, cocoa, a bit watery. Medium-thin, light finish. Great value beer.

4/25/2017 Boatswain Chocolate Stout (12 fl oz can): Aroma of wet tobacco, earthy dirt, and a hint of molasses; deep brown color with a foamy khaki-colored head; flavor is roasty, but more like burnt coffee left sitting in the pot on the hot pad for far too long, blackstrap, fruity notes, earthy hops and a roasty dark cocoa finish; medium body, smooth, perhaps slightly overcarbonated; just okay overall, good enough to use in the marinade I just made with it and just enough for a good sample to taste and that’s about it as I wouldn’t drink this regularly even at the price of only $0.84/can!
