22oz. served into a snifter glass.
A - Pours a super dark brown with ruby highlights. A firm 2" tan head ministers beautiful arbitrary lacing.
S - Cocoa powder, wet grain, caramel malt, copper penny, grassy, bready yeast, brewed tea, hints of malt extract.
T - Molasses, iron, English tea tannins stick to the cheeks, roasted malts, cocoa, burnt caramel/toffee malts layer against the tannins. There’s faint hints of herbal hops in the background. Finishes fairly dry with a coating of tannins.
M - Medium lush body, with moderate carbonation, thins out when warm.
This fits an English Strong Ale rather than the American version.
Strong tea tannins pair with cocoa and a rich toasted caramel backbone with an herbal bitterness. This works well for an English Style.

Bubblegum aroma. Flavor is malt, come nuttiness, sweet, pretty crappy brew. BeerandBlues2 (13810) - Escondido, California, USA - JUN 4, 2013
Bottle @ home. Pours clear brown with a small, fizzy off-white head, short retention with no lacing. Aroma is caramel, nutty, and cookie malt with dates and faint earthy hops. Flavor is sweet malt, light hops and bitterness, dark fruits and a sweet finish. Medium body and carbonation. Tastebuds808 (16) - - MAY 30, 2013
I didn't like some of the other beers from this brand. You can read those reviews. Basically I tasted alot of rice flavors that really turned me off.
I did however really liked this beer. Medium bitterness. Slight chocolate. Kinda in between a amber and darker color.
I thought this beer was really good for the price and will get this again.

22oz bottle labeled as Boatswain H.L.V. Pours dark reddish brown with a tan head. Butter taste giving way to metallic but somehow still drinkable. It would be easy to say this is terrible but it actually isn’t and, given the low price at TJs it serves a purpose.

One time der friend and netcafe owner, Ali brew a spl batch of beer from much grain and hop he have in secret garden area. He spend much time and effort in making this gr8 beer. This remind me of that. Sweet flavours and slight bitter at finish. jgb9348 (6477) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - MAY 12, 2013
Deep dark brown coloured body with a thick, three centimetre tall tan head and tints of ruby. Aroma of nuts, sweet raisins, plums and figs, some malt and a bit of nice earthy hops. Medium-bodied; Assertive nutty and malty flavour with a lot of sweetness from caramel, caster sugar and some lighter fruits, all with a good earthy finish. Aftertaste is quite complex with good sugars and maltiness and a surprising tart quality and a bit of a rustic floral flavour too. Overall, a surprisingly good and complex beer for cheap at Trader Joe’s and one definitely worth trying for the price and variance. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Trader Joe’s in Alexandria (Old Town), Virginia on 05-October-2012 for US$1.99 sampled at home in Washington on 16-November-2012. edgallow (4471) - nashville, Tennessee, USA - APR 26, 2013

Okay at first but soon becomes way too sour. I tried valiantly but ended up pouring out a little less than half of the bomber. Odd; the first time I had this was at a tasting and it was my favorite of dozens. jb (3407) - Rochester, New York, USA - APR 21, 2013
Bottle Ron shared. Pretty decent but nothing I remember much about. Body and depth were there.
