I have been very impressed with the Mission Street beers from Trader Joe’s, so maybe we should talk about those instead. hershiser2 (3834) - Charlottesville, Virginia, USA - JUN 26, 2013
Bottled as "Boatswain American IPA". Picked up at Trader Joe’s, Charlottesville. Pours amber with a 2" beige head. Smells of generic hops and grapefruit. Tastes of bubblegum, malt, and pine. Ehh. chacobella (57) - Colorado, USA - JUN 24, 2013
Please help me, I can’t remember, but is this the way ipa’s used to taste before they became super hopped? No wonder I didn’t like them then. What seemed like a Trader Joe’s bargin turned out to be as plain as it’s label. cubs (10742) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - JUN 11, 2013
Bottle in KC picked up at Trader Joes. Pours a hazy dark reddish orange appearance with a small tan head. Biscuit, caramel, bread, light hops in the nose. A bit tangy, very light citrusy, biscuit/cracker malty, moderately bitter flavor. Overall pretty bland. crossovert (14146) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JUN 7, 2013
not as poorly-smelling as other minhas beers but the flavor is just bland malts, metal, and but a whisper of hops.

Holy crap, this beer is a disgrace. It’s so far away from being an IPA it’s laughable. Slight hops aroma, but the taste is what I call the "wet paper towel bad lager" taste. Absolutely horrible. Shared at the office with two other beer pals. We each took a taste and promptly dumped it down the drain so we could move on to a Ballast Point Sculpin IPA. A- Pours a crystal clear amber with one finger of cream colored head that forms a solid top barrier. Minor specks of lacing.
S - Light citrus, maderin orange, caramel malt, doughy yeast.
T- Leafy green hops laced with citrus, caramel malt, tea tannins, alcohol is very present. The hops turn earthy and herbal on the finish, mixing with alcohol creating an astringent perfume character.
M - Creamy soft feel, light to medium body.
The aroma reminds me of an American Pale Ale. The hop flavors are there but things seems manufactured. There’s a strange artificial flavor going on. No freshness, just the ample amount of caramel malt stands out. The market is so saturated with IPAs that you have to bring your A game when it comes to this style.

Didn't like it that much. Sure it beats the average rice beer but just didn't like the flavors. Too sweet for me. Had a amber kinda malt and mild hop flavor but something else in it turned me off. Bought a couple other and hope I like them better.

Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate caramel, sweet fruit, orange, and some light aged herbal hops. It pours a transparent amber with a one finger off-white head that quickly settles to a thin film. The flavor starts moderate-heavily malty with caramel and toffee. There’s a light fruitiness in the background. The finish has light-moderate citrus and herbal hops that definitely taste old. It’s medium bodied with moderate carbonation . Overall, I always hesitate to buy any of the Trader Joe’s mixture of IPA’s, but I end up taking the chance because they are so cheap. As is usually the case, I end up feeling like I should have passed over them. This one is no different. Way too malty for my IPA preferences and the hops taste old. charule (2302) - New York, New York, USA - MAY 3, 2013
