Amber colored pour. Small off white head. Little bit of lacing. A small hint of hops under a muted malt aroma. Taste is vegetal with a carbonic finish. slowrunner77 (12044) - Reno, Nevada, USA - SEP 13, 2014
"Not bad. above average (for them) but really, that’s not saying much. Overly malty for my tastes and thereefore light on the hops. As an english pale? OK. As an american IPA, I’ll pass, even at $2.50 per bomber..."

I had this bottled for Trader Joe’s as Boatswain American IPA. It isn’t bad. It pours a hazy mahogany color with slight head and lace. The aroma is insubstantial, but what is there is sweet by IPA standards. I picked up on honey, caramel, and thin hops. The flavor is sweet, too. It opens with a sweet malt, and there’s a little hoppiness in the middle, but the close is just more sweetness. Kind of saccharine, but not enough to ruin it. You gotta keep the price in mind when reviewing these Trader Joe’s beers. For a $2.50 to $3.00 beer, it isn’t bad at all. beertholomeus (1813) - California, USA - AUG 7, 2014
Pours a light amber color with a white head. Hop, citrus, floral, caramel and malt aroma and flavors. Slightly oxidized. Medium body and carbonation with a floral and caramel finish. jflopsu (1614) - New Jersey, USA - JUL 7, 2014
Pours a clear gold. Has a malty and grainy aroma. Taste is a mix of malts and light citrus hops. A light bitter aftertaste.

Hazy copper pour with a 1 finger, creamy beige head. Aroma is floral, citrus and fruity hops, lemon, light berry notes and caramel syrup. Flavor is sweet malt, planty hops, some citrus, corn silage, sweet caramel, sorghum and some weird planty, fruity and higher alcohol notes that I can’t really describe. Light to medium body with a medium, sharp carbonation and off dry, syrupy feel. Really weird and not very good. Probably not worth the $3/bomber price. Cheers! ronaldtheriot (1934) - Laplace, Louisiana, USA - JUN 24, 2014
Boatswain American IPA has a rather thin, off-white head, a mostly clear, orange appearance, some bubbles, and not much lacing left on the glass. The aroma is of mild citrus (think about orange peel), and white bread crust, with possibly a caramelized sugar note. Taste is of all that, with a bitterness that comes across as nowhere near a 79 IBU, but it’s there to at least balance the beer. Mouthfeel is on the light side, and Boatswain American IPA finishes dry, refreshing, and highly drinkable. For a store-brand India Pale Ale, this is a pleasant surprise. Bottle from Trader Joe’s. Pours almost clear bright copper with a bubbly, frothy off white head. Tastes like hops, sweet orange, caramel, light nuttyness. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like hips, light booze, and orange citrus. MunBro (942) - St. Albert, Alberta, CANADA - JUN 7, 2014
Tastes nothing like an IPA. Dark ale flavor. So bad. Lots of malt flavor and regrets here.
