22 oz. bomber sold as Rhinelander Boatswain American IPA, $1.99 at Trader Joe’s. Okay, i can respect a beer from Minhas. I took a picture of the bottle with a full glass, and over the past few minutes have been taking in a smell of resiny, almost green hops. Poured a brownish-amber body under a dense white head. Up close, the hop smell lessens, and there’s a bit more malt. Taste is a little better than I’d expect. A lot of pinprick carbonation helps deliver the hops in the form of pine and a bit grass. Nicely managed hops, and just a little bit more than the squeamish would want to try. A great beer for the price. Considering I’ll reuse the bomber if I can ever get homebrewing again, that’s extra value. gregwilsonstl (2640) - St. Louis, Missouri, USA - APR 17, 2012
This is much more of a brown beet than it is an Ipa. Brown and nutty. Thin head. Low ibu for ipa. Very tasty beer, just not an ipa. csaso (2321) - Missouri, USA - APR 20, 2012
Bottle - had this as Boatswain American IPA, from Trader Joes - good size foamy head, medium copper color, mild hoppy aroma, balanced flavor with fair hops and decent malt backbone Nekronos (4175) - Xalapa, MEXICO - DEC 28, 2012

Bottle from Trader Joe’s. Pours almost clear bright copper with a bubbly, frothy off white head. Tastes like hops, sweet orange, caramel, light nuttyness. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like hips, light booze, and orange citrus. ronaldtheriot (1991) - Laplace, Louisiana, USA - JUN 24, 2014
Boatswain American IPA has a rather thin, off-white head, a mostly clear, orange appearance, some bubbles, and not much lacing left on the glass. The aroma is of mild citrus (think about orange peel), and white bread crust, with possibly a caramelized sugar note. Taste is of all that, with a bitterness that comes across as nowhere near a 79 IBU, but it’s there to at least balance the beer. Mouthfeel is on the light side, and Boatswain American IPA finishes dry, refreshing, and highly drinkable. For a store-brand India Pale Ale, this is a pleasant surprise. Labeled Boatswain American I.P.A. at Trader Joe"s. Much better than the ratings. Modest aroma, but taste was a fine blend of sweet malt and woodsy hop flavor. 6.7% ABV. HighlanderOne (1373) - York, SC via NJ, South Carolina, USA - MAY 7, 2016
Poured from big bottle that I found hidden in my basement. (Boatswain American IPA ). Probably been sitting around for 2 or 3 years.
Aroma of hops, caramel, malt.
Appearance is cloudy dark Amber, bit of head.
Tasting caramel, pancake, pine resin hops, cream, smoke, banana, spice.
Palate is quite tame for something called IPA.
Overall, a very tasty brew, just lacks the bitterness that an IPA should have. Would work better as a brown ale.
