COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed as an American Pale Ale with large quantities of Oregon Cascade hops and lesser amounts of other hops. A strong but pleasant hop flavor at the start with a smooth hoppy finish. Silver Medal 1995 World Beer Championships. Lake Effect Pale Ale gets its name from the winter storms that develop over Lake Michigan and then drop its moisture in the form of large and numerous snow flakes resulting in snow accumulations up to two feet near the lake and lessening to the east.

Bottle. Very light citrusy hops aroma. Hazy gold with no head. Citrus hops and biscuity barley malt flavor. Medium body, flat carbonation. Considering this brewery went out of business about 2 years ago, I wasn’t expecting much from what was obviously and old bottle.

Pours brassy gold with a short, off-white head. Scent is crisp citrus and water. Taste is malt....barely, borderline bitter. A bit flat. Probably would not have been bad when fresh.

22 oz bottle
This was picked up in Indiana and I think it might have been infected at some point. Regardless I will leave a rating until I can get another bottle (if that ever happens). This had some promise but in the end was marred by the sourness that I am pretty certain is not intended. Fortunately it was a fairly inexpensive experiment.

Aroma / Appearance - The foamy head that took over the entire glass was the first warning sign. Eventually though it did settle into a golden yellow body that sparkled like champagne. Yeasty and bright the nose was somewhat crisp. Whether or not they meant to it ended up smelling like a typical Jolly Pumpkin release.

Flavor / Palate - Here is where the problems really begin. Sour apple juice is the primary player in something that seems flawed from the get go. If you get past that it seems to have some promise. I just hope that it is not indicative of the remaining bottles that I have yet to open like the stout.

Bottle. Pours a clear light amber with a slightly off-white head. Aroma is dominated by malt notes giving a grainy aroma, some molasses and caramel present. Flavor is dominated by malts as well, slight piney undertone, but mainly a grainy biscuit flavor.

Pours dark orange with a mostly receding off-white head. Notes of soapy hops, cheese, pear, citrus and acidity. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Found this one bottled at a liquor store in St. John, Indiana, as part of a mix 12 pack of various beers from Indiana brewers. Very citrusy brew overall, with plenty of lemon, lime and grapefruit in the nose and flavor. Pucker-dry finish. Not bad!

Maybe a bad bottle - virtually flat beer with no head, almost no carbonation. tasty though, with pleasant maliness mixed with slight hops / spice finish. Will seek out a new bottle to re-rate - with more lively carbonationt his brew would be quite good.
