The ancient legends that abound the Russian Imperial Stout of yore are filled with tempestuous romance, sinful thievery, and scurvy, too. So highly regarded was this historic recipe, the Russian Kings tried to keep it all to themselves. They failed. Today we bring you our own dastardly dark version, with a rich and roasty aroma, notes of plum and port and a velvety texture so luscious it just might make a grown man weep.

Idiosynkrasie (7516) - Bielefeld, GERMANY - FEB 27, 2015
355ml bottle. Jet black colour with late awakening, small, creamy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, brown head. Roasty, dark malty aroma, notes of liquorice, hints of soy sauce, dark chocolate, burnt coffee, a metallic touch. Taste is dry, roasty dark malty, bitter hoppy, slightly burning alcoholic, some dark chocolate, some coffee; slightly metallic finish, maybe oxidation had a finger in the pie. Looks like having an oily texture, but leaves behind a light and thin impression on the palate.

Benzai (15608) - Oirschot, THE NETHERLANDS, NETHERLANDS - FEB 17, 2015
Bottle @ home. Opaque pitch black color, medium sized dark brown head that lasts for a decent while and leaves fair to good lacing. Aroma is malts, dark roasted malts, coffee, coffee roast, slightly earthy. Taste malts, roasted malts, lightly coffee, a touch of espresso, medium to heavy bitter. Moderately thick, moderately oily texture, roasty bitter finish, medium body and suitable carbonation. If you like roasty imperial stouts like I do, this is one you’ll enjoy. Can anyone please get me the bourbon barrel aged version? That’s gotta be even more awesome!
