The ancient legends that abound the Russian Imperial Stout of yore are filled with tempestuous romance, sinful thievery, and scurvy, too. So highly regarded was this historic recipe, the Russian Kings tried to keep it all to themselves. They failed. Today we bring you our own dastardly dark version, with a rich and roasty aroma, notes of plum and port and a velvety texture so luscious it just might make a grown man weep.

Bottle from Total Wine Summerlin, Las Vegas. Black pour, thin tan head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, tobacco, licorice, spicy and very roasted. Flavor is dry, bitter and roasted, Huge body, great balance and very smooth while still very impressive and strong. Amazing brew.

Mild brown sugar aroma and smokey, thin brown head. Strong coffee flavours and very intense, not a mild beer by any means.

A deep dark stout with a thin dark brown head. In aroma, smooth chocolate malt with nice piney and floral hops, licorice notes, nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity chocolate malt with nice floral hops, licorice notes, nice alcohol, light butterscotch finale.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel. Thanks zvikar. Black with a light brown head. Roasty aroma, a bit burnt, with coffee beans and dark chocolate. Roasty burnt flavor with coffee and a bitter finish, roasty, hoppy, a bit herbal. Rather full-bodied, kinda silky.

Deep in color with a matching dark foam. Head smells like chocolate and dust. Dies down quickly. Nice roasted malt flavor with sticky red and purple fruits in the finish.

651 ml. bottle. Pours a thick, well retained, brown head, with slight lacing, over a clear brown black (SRM 35) body......nose is heavy roasted malts, with chocolate dominating coffee, light dried fruits, including plum, raisin, hints of toffee/caramel, light hop spice....taste is heavy chocolate, lighter coffee from the roasted malts, light plum, raisin, berries, brown sugar sweetness, leading to a moderate, earthy, spicy hop lingering, bitter, finish....mouth feel thick, creamy, quite sticky, minimal astringency, alcohol warmth present, carbonation adds to creamy sensations. This is a huge, rich, nicely balanced example of this heavy style. It is a bit on the sweet end of the spectrum, which could be balanced by a bit of umami. BJCP 9/3/16/5/8
