Pours dark (near black) with tan head (1 finger) with medium retention. Roasted malt aroma, some light vanilla and coffee. Medium dry bitterness up front, with a slight sweetness lingering in the finish. Aftertaste has a hint of licorice. Smooth texture, medium bodied. Clear dark brown color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, light brown to beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, bread, chocolate, milk chocolate, dusty, solvent. Flavor is moderate sweet with a long duration, earthy, cleaner, dark malt, sweet malt, roasted. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Aroma: Medium jalapenos, medium-light coffee. Light acidity. No hops.
Appearance: Clear, black, nearly opaque body. Small, light brown head. Fair retention.
Flavour: Medium-high roast. Medium-high bitterness, enhanced by dark malts. Medium woody, tobacco. Medium-light jalapenos. Light ash. Light lactic. Dry finish with lingering roast.
Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium carbonation. Medium-light astringency.
Overall: As a sweet stout I expected more chocolate and sweetness. The roast is too aggressive. Jalapenos is a well known, but not understood off-aroma/flavor with stouts. Lacking in body. Astringency is a problem.

Backlog. From tap at Mitchell’s Scottish Ale House, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town, with HO 10.04.12. Black in colour, off-white head. Aroma of roasted malt with a hint of old Port. Some caramel sweetness. Round mouthfield, little carbonation. Aftertaste of roasted malt and malt bitterness. A good and well-balanced stout.
