Black House is an oatmeal coffee stout bursting with coffee aroma and flavor. Modern Times is one of the only breweries in the world to roast our own coffee, which allows us to be exceptionally picky about which coffees we use and how we roast them. The result is an abundantly flavorful beer that’s incredibly complex and aromatic, with loads of roast character and a chocolate-covered espresso bean finish. But Black House packs all that flavor into a reasonable package: at only 5.8% ABV, it can comfortably be consumed by the pint.

Nitro at Base Camp Pizza at Heavenly Valley - pours black with a slight brown edge, tan head. A bit crisp at first before yielding to a lovely silkiness. Nutty, slight lactose nose with cocoa. Lots in this, vanilla bean, cocoa, leather, lactose, nuts, comes together nicely.

Smells like roasted coffee beans. Taste is grainy exactly like a dark blend should taste. Not overlly chocolatey.

Aroma is sweet caramel coffee. Appearance is almost black with a burgundy tint, medium off white head. Taste is coffee sweet malt forward, mild chocolate roast. Palate is medium. Roasty coffee lingers. Overall a nice beer, but nothing extraordinary for the price.

16oz can. Black body with tan head. Nice fruity herbal coffee, roasty, chocolate aromas. Medium bodied. Black coffee, fruity, herbal, ashy lightly astringent flavors----not bad

A draft pour at The Pier Chowder House in Pt. Arena, CA. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Nose is both chocolate and coffee. Full in body. Creamy in mouth feel. Flavor is dark roasted malts with lots of chocolate. Finishes with a lot of bitter coffer. Really tasty. Really good.

Klares dunkelbraun mit reichlich Schaum. Röstmalzig, Kaffee, dunkle Schokolade, Kakao, etwas Vanille, leicht bitter.

My concerns about Black House being overrated proved to be unnecessary. Black House is a beautifully rich, creamy coffee-infused Stout with tons of coffee boldness and some balancing sweetness. Bitter, earthy espresso-like coffee, cream, and chocolate in the flavor profile. Velvety texture with some brightness coming from the roasted beans. As one of the core beers in the MT lineup, it absolutely delivers.

Aroma is obvious coffee and roasted malty notes with some hints of vanilla and toffee on the sweeter side notes. Taste is at first slightly metallic actually, but when you let it rest in the glass for a while it fades out and taste is more pleasant. Hard roasted coffee grounds, chocolate, cocoa powder and light earthy notes. Light creamy and sweet notes together with the hard roast gives this one a little edge after all.

Can. Black pour. Aroma of roasted malt, creamy coffee and chocolate. Nice smooth taste of chocolate, creamy coffee, roasted malt and a bitter coffee finish. Nice stuff.

Canned. Pours black with an average tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate and coffee notes. Sweet flavor that ends up being dry and a little bitter. Medium bodied, oily texture and soft to average carbonation. A nice Stout. 🌟🌟🌟🌟
