GUATEMALAN COFFEE AGED IN BOURBON BARRELS

MALTS:
TWO ROW - DARK CHOCOLATE - MUNICH - PALE CHOCOLATE - MIDNIGHT WHEAT - FLAKED BARLEY - C170 - CARAPILS

Modern Times is the first brewery/roastery in the world to make beer with barrel-aged coffee beans. The barrel-aged coffee adds layer upon layer of rich bourbon, oak, and vanilla character to the underlying nutty, floral, full-bodied Guatemalan coffee. As a result, City of the Dead is an outrageously complex and flavorful stout, even though the beer itself has not spent any time in barrels. You can buy yourself a bag of our house-roasted barrel-aged beans - and even sign up for a coffee subscription - at moderntimesmerch.com.

Aroma is vanilla, coffee beans, and chocolate. Taste is a very nicely balanced profile of chocolate and rich earthy coffee beans. The bitterness is nice and doesn’t linger too long.

Bottle shared thanks to svartvit. Black with nice creamy beige head. Quite some coffee, sweet red fruits, soft milk chocolate, roasted malts, light vanilla wood, soft chalky. Surprisingly fruity and complex, has some lovely aromas. Medium sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with a bit slick dry feel.

Slight bourbon aroma with light anise and cocoa. Dark color with brown tint. Taste is some coffee, some very light dark chocolate, a deep over ripe berry flavor. Mouth is thick. Bottle.

Bottle, 13C. Dark brown with a cm of light tan head that’s soon a coat. Aroma of sweetened coffee, some floaty vanilla, boiled lemon and spirit notes creep up to match the initially dominant (nice) coffee. Got more intriguing the longer it sat. Very light bodied - would be for a 5% stout really. Lowish carbonation. Lots going on - sweet chocolate, quite firm citrus tinged bitterness, vanilla, woody, even a little astringency. Interesting, but I wish the stout underpinned things a little more clearly.

Opaque black with a medium tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Roasted malts, chocolate, dark fruits, char, light alcohol.
