GUATEMALAN COFFEE AGED IN BOURBON BARRELS

MALTS:
TWO ROW - DARK CHOCOLATE - MUNICH - PALE CHOCOLATE - MIDNIGHT WHEAT - FLAKED BARLEY - C170 - CARAPILS

Modern Times is the first brewery/roastery in the world to make beer with barrel-aged coffee beans. The barrel-aged coffee adds layer upon layer of rich bourbon, oak, and vanilla character to the underlying nutty, floral, full-bodied Guatemalan coffee. As a result, City of the Dead is an outrageously complex and flavorful stout, even though the beer itself has not spent any time in barrels. You can buy yourself a bag of our house-roasted barrel-aged beans - and even sign up for a coffee subscription - at moderntimesmerch.com.

Deep brown pour with fast dimishing, thin espresso head. Cold brew coffee, cinnamon, walnuts. Taste is loads of bittersweet coffee which leaves room to some nice, not at all overwhelming bourbon/whiskey notes. Additional flavours of dried dark fruits and caramel. Nice, well-rounded texture with medium carbonation level. Very good, very drinkable.

Bomber from Julio's. Bottled 9/25/17. Pours dark brown with a light beige head. Aroma is dark chocolate, dark coffee, bourbon. Flavor isn't as nice as the aroma. It's dark chocolate, dark coffee, bourbon, but seems a bit flat.

Bottle: Poured a black color stout with a nice large brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt notes with black cholate note and some bourbon notes with floral coffee notes. Taste is a mix of bourbon notes with some black chocolate notes, roasted malt with nice floral coffee notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. Nice level of complexity, balance and good overall drinkability.

Well the coffee is a bit much in the beginning. But it gets better. A thick beer, but quite tasty.

Taster at taproom. Pours like espresso, thin tan lacy cremation head. Big coffee and roasted aromas. Smooth mouthfeel but some welcome booze heat in the back. Lots of coffee stouts can be too in your face. This is well balanced well made and a really solid example of "how to".

Idiosynkrasie (7854) - Bielefeld, GERMANY - SEP 27, 2017
650ml bottle. Jet black colour with average, thick, creamy, fairly lasting and lacing, tan head. Roasty dark malty aroma, notes of mocha and dark chocolate, a touch of burnt caramel. Taste is slightly bitter, roasty dark malty, hints of residual dark malty sweetness, notes of dark chocolate, mocha, a touch of burnt caramel; some liquorice in the finish. Smooth, soft and silky palate. Very homogeneous, focused, clean and highly drinkable.

Bottle from BBWest. Pours black. Aroma is pure coffee beans, freshly roasted, incredibly intense, chocolate and mocca. Body is medium, nicely sweet and bitter with an astounding balance. Coffee been flavours, low bourbon. Lively and very present carbonation. Rather dry palate. Super easy to drink and bursts out with flavours. An impeccable coffee stout!

Very malty; roast coffee, roasty malts, espresso, dark chocolate, coffee grounds, vanilla, oaky, bourbon notes. Bit fruity. Hoppy; good hop bitterness. Bittersweet roast coffee malty throughout.
