COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
At 7.5% ABV & 100 IBUs, Phalanx is somewhere between a single IPA & a double IPA. It prominently features Australian Summer hops, which bring a very distinctive peach/melon character to the beer. That awesome fruit character is balanced by some citrusy Chinook hops & a touch of dankness from Horizon.

22oz bomber picked up at Valley Farms pours with a gold to copper body that has a slight inviting hop haziness and supporting a thin near white head of foam. The mild aroma offers up sweet candy like citrus hops, cantaloupe and tangerine gummy bears. The taste is hoppy and citrusy to start with virtually zero bitter hops and all flavor malt sweetened hoppy notes. Beneath the malt sweetness and soft citrus notes lurks a pleasing yet mild earthy tea like hoppiness. Overall this seems too sweet, too soft and too . . . well lacking in hop bitterness.

Bottle... Pours clear and amber with a white, fat-bubbled head. The aroma is a juicy medley of fuzzy fruit, tropical fruits and melons. Medium-bodied with adequate carbonation. The flavor offers a boatload of fruitiness accompanied by a generous measure of rindy bitterness. Finishes bittersweet – more bitter than sweet. Bottle courtesy of richiesd!

Bottle, probably a little too old. Pours a deep orange with frothy white head. Aroma is very big peach hops. Taste is a nicely sweet peach, pear and hoppy beer. Maybe a little too sweet as it warms. Nice but was expecting a little more from an IPA from Modern Times.

maekchu (3911) - Hirakata, JAPAN - SEP 28, 2014
Tap at World Craft Beer Tasting 2014. Pungent grassy nose, fresh weeds crushed up in a mortar. Muddy amber brown color. Nice light citrusy initial, sort of goes to an orange soft drink in mid, and returns to form in late mid and final, with fairly scratchy hopping. Medium body, Doesn’t really seem to have such a high IBU level. Unusual, interesting flavors.

KyotoLefty (10264) - Kyoto, JAPAN - SEP 27, 2014
Tap at World Craft Beer Tasting 2014. Deep orange-amber color, very cloudy, fine head. Huge tropical fruit nose, peach and melon, some citrus, wheaty biscuit, nice balanced bitterness. Weird and good.
