TAR (2708) - Marshall (Asheville area), North Carolina, USA - OCT 25, 2016
Draft at Moerlein Lager House. Dark golden. Snugly packed collar of white foam. Fairly clean, albeit simple, aroma of cookie, marmalade, wet hay and a light note of DMS. Expansive carbonation. A swoosh test produces foamy carbonic residue on the tongue. Pronounced fruitiness on initial sip is muddled by fuzzy DMS and a subtle twang of vinegary acids. Some salvaging crispness beneath the somewhat limp, wet paper malt. Subtle roasted nuttiness trails the firm toastiness as the acidity wanes. Juicy lemony hops sizzle, although their bright oiliness struggles to overcome the husky popcorn and white vinegar characteristics. Obscurely malty, yet well-attenuated finish, shows sugar cookie being eclipsed by wet hay. While vastly superior to most of the other lagers in their range, and certainly more characterful, there just isn’t much here that excites me. Very average.

Draft to taster at Bru pour light gold with moderate white head. Nose crystal and apple fruit malt. Taste grainy malt, then light caramel covered apple. A little chemical funk as well. Not my favorite style, but to me a few off flavors as well.

4oz on tap at the Lager House. Labeled 5.3%; 19 IBU. Clear golden orange color. Thin off-white head, leaves good thicker lace. Medium body. Kind of crisp, lighter carbonation. Lightly dry finish. Toasty malts, bready, some caramel. Lightly spicy, peppery. Light to moderate sweet taste, light to moderate bitter taste. Pretty tasty, easy-drinking, balanced oktoberfest. I’m told they scaled back the malt sweetness a bit this year, seems like a good move.

Slightly hazed amber witha thick tan head. Nose is toffee, grainy malt. Taste i weak toffee, malt, with a watery, herbal bitter. Rather unappealing and bland.

Bottle. Vegetal and grainy malt aroma. Slightly hazy light copper with a moderate ivory head. Vegetal caramel malt and light herbal/spicy bitter flavor. Medium body. I just wasn’t digging this one.
