COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A robust American Brown Ale clocking in at 5.8% ABV. This ale is brewed with 23% malted rye for a distinctively spicy finish and dry hopped with a blend of American and New Zealand hops. A complex blend of citrus, pepper, and chocolate that harkens back to the brawling and revelry that occurred in Cincinnati’s Northside neighborhood in the early 19th Century. Helltown can always use a little Rye-ot to spice things up.

Draft sample at the Listermann Craft Beer Octoberfest from notes. Pours a dark cola brown color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have toasted malts, earthy character, spicy rye, chocolate, some pepper, a decent brown ale that does a little bit more than most.

Draft sampler at Tap & Screw on April 21, 2015. Very dark brown/ruby hue, aroma like a cross between a brown ale and an IPA (citrus makes its presence known), rye and hops more prominent in the flavor than the sweet malt taste. Not the best balance you’ll find in a beer but not bad at all.

(tap) clear brown colour with a small brown head; aroma of fresh crushed weeds, then stewed fruit, roast; balanced flavour with a long, light bitter finish

on tap @ Party Town / Florence KY --- Clear brown color, tan head, streamers of lace. Taste is malt that adds light spice and woody cedar on the swallow, moving from there to a mildly hopped finish. Uneven, a little woody, not well-balanced.

Mild malty aroma with a hint of ipa perfume. Nice and dark is the look. Yes, pretty complex, lots of malt with hints of choco and even a tad of pepper and medium bitter hops. After I saw it was a rye beer, I wasn’t expecting much but the rye in this is not overdone, easily accepted on this end. As session continues, it does get a little more bitter but I appreciate the fact it’s not getting in yer face. Finish does have some of that ipa effect happening in there.

Sample at The Ohio Taproom. Pours a dark brown color with some cola around the edges, and a medium light beige head that recedes steadily to an outer ring. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast malt, chocolate and citrus. Light to medium body with flavors of toasted malt, chocolate and mild citrusy hops. The finish is roasty with a malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods. Cocoa powder and dark chocolate upfront. Decent hoppy profile. Thin body. Nice.

Very nice in the aroma and appearance department. Interesting, but has too much going on with it--little busy. All in all, a fun brown ale analogue to try.

Bottle: I love this beer...its nice and spicy rye plays perfectly into the fall weather. The aromas are nice and bready with a slight hop presence that brightens it up. Flavor is much like you would hope for after smelling it... Rye is upfront and not ashamed to be there...this is a great beer. Loved it!

Draft to taster. Looks good; a mostly transparent light cola brown with foamy light beige head. Smells solid; spicy and hoppy with notes of black pepper and dark chocolate. The rye really comes through too, but nicely so. Tastes like it smells with a nice rye tingle. A good rye beer.
