You’ve made a discovery – a Golden Helles from the original Lager House build by Christian Moerlein in Cincinnati’s Brewery District over 150 years ago. Today, Moerlein Lager House is brewed to the same standards that declared it the first American Brew to pass the Reinheitsgebot Purity Law. This Munchner-styled Helles is a balanced lager featuring a lightly toasted, yet defined malt character and a touch of hops for a clean finish. Moerlein Helles features a deep golden color, 2-row and Munich malt, Hersbrucker hops, averages 5.2% alcohol by volume with an original gravity of 13 and bitterness units of 19.

355ml twist-off.

It pours a clear gold with a frothy white head that leaves some decent lacing.

Smell isn’t like a true helles. More like an APL. The yeast is uncontrolled.

The flavor is sweet and yeasty. A bit of noble hops. Really not typical for the style.

I don’t know if this benefited from lowered expectations, but I kind of enjoyed this. It was slightly cloudy gold, with a sloppy white head. Smells like fresh bread, with a touch of hops. Flavor is bread, with a touch of corn, and a crisp finish.

Bottle on a small lager glass. Pours golden with thin white head and light lacing. Aroma is caramel malts, grass hops and I want to say something yeasty. Taste is both sweet and bitter. Finishes dry. LIght to medium body. Not bad but nothing more.

From the bottle at GABF. Pours an odd deep gold with a stiff head. Nose is strange, quite fruity and just a bit off. Some grainy notes and DMS come through as well. On tasting, more of that fruitiness that is really distracting. Can’t really sort through this one, but it’s a definite miss. Far from clean.

Similar to the national brands in color, head (bare minimum), and lacing (none). Taste is sweet corn and malt with a carbonation edge, maybe a little bit of hop bittering at the finsih. Okay compared to Bud Light, but not in the same league as good craft beers.

Pours a clear golden body with a thin white head. Fruity and floral with grass characteristics. Kind of skunky. Thin.

Pours a pale yellow with a very small white head. It smells sweet and malty. It tastes like sweet corn, but not overpoweringly so. It’s a good beer for not my favorite style.

Enjoyed on tap at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, OH while taking in a Braves vs. Reds game. Appearance like bud light, maybe a tad darker. Aroma light lager yeast with maybe a touch of hops. Taste like bud light, maybe I got hosed? Actually, maybe a bit more crisp than BL, but nowhere near as good as the other Moerlein I had.

Chipalsa (1310) - Florida, USA - JUL 17, 2011
Least fave of the Moerlein series. Light hops and vanilla on the scent with a hint of spices. The taste was great, lil’ hops and spices on the tongue, and somewhat of a nice malty balance. Finished a little roasty and bitter - the only part I liked.

3.2
Nephilium (1821) - Cleveland, Ohio, USA - MAY 13, 2011
This starts with a mild sweet, lager aroma. It pours a clear gold with a full white head. This starts with a kiss of sweetness, and has a crisp bitter finish. This is an easy drinking beer, and would make a good introduction to craft.
