COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Mont Des Cats is a trappist abbey in Northern France, a few kilometres from the Belgian border. They do not have a brewery in their monastery, so their beer cannot show the Authentic Trappist Product logo. But it doesn’t get much closer – they have their beer brewed by the monks of Chimay!
Developed independently to the Chimay range, the beer is a lovely copper colour. The link to Chimay is evident in the distinctive Chimay yeast character, in both the aroma and taste.
A pleasant caramel malt sweetness introduces the beer, being joined by hints of dried fruits, gentle spices and an earthy, herbal hop character. As the beer progresses, the bitterness seems to build toward a nice lingering finish.
The abbey only makes one beer, with no intention for more. The abbey is recognised as a Trappist Monastery, allowing them to use the term on the labeling. But as the beer is not brewed on their own premises, the beer is not a Trappist ale.

Amber beer. It has a sweet freshness with a more bitter aftertaste. Well balanced. A versatile beer: it is easy drinkable, but also good to enjoy, combines very well with meat-based dishes.

Icedwarf (1765) - Etten-Leur, NETHERLANDS - JUL 26, 2015
Bruin bier met veel schuim. Smaak is sterk en bitter hoppig, ietwat zoet, caramel en chokolade met een licht fruitig zuur.

Bottle at The Roebuck, Leek (Titanic) Pours a clear deep amber colour with a fizzy white head. Aroma of banana, clove, bread, brown sugar and some candy floss. Taste of banana, clove, bread, brown sugar, liquorice, some caramel and light dark fruit. Medium bodied and moderate carbonation. A long, bittersweet, bready then liquoricey finish. All malt but with a subtle liquoricey bitterness to it. Nothing special but drinkable for its strength.

Sausagedog (15) - Scarborough, AUSTRALIA - JUL 21, 2015
Subtle belgian yeast aroma. Toasted malts, quite dry and carbonated. Hints of Banana before the bitterness steals it away. Bit of a woody taste, almost burnt/smoke taste. Like the murky golden hue, bit too bitter for my palate.

PorterPounder (8231) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - JUN 21, 2015
Tallahassee, Fl - Market Square Liquors - 750 ml cage-corked bottle. Medium amber pour, slight haze, soft film of a white head, not much lacing. Aroma of yeast, cookie dough, some light molasses. Flavor runs along a similar vein, pick up some raisin-like sweetness, some canned baked brown bread, a bit of brown sugar. Mouthfeel has a nice thick spritz to it. Nice Father’s Day treat.

Cerbier (835) - - MAY 24, 2015
0,33l Flasche. Orangebraunes Bier mit schöner Schaumkrone. Riecht nach Malz und Rosinen. Schmeckt auch so, im Nachgeschmack etwas metallisch.

Pour is a murky brown with a small white head. Aroma is a mix of brown sugar and a nice dark fruit. Flavor is more of the dark fruit with a prickly carbonation. Finish is musty and dry with little to almost no sweetness. This is a fine Belgian ale. Dark malt and fruit abounds.

Donker oranje/amberkleurig bier met kleine schuimkraag. Moutig aroma. Je proeft sinaasappel, hazelnoot, mout, marsepein. Doet mij beetje denken aan de La Trappe Quadrupel maar dan minder sterk. Redelijke afdronk, beetje bitter. Prima bier. Zeker aan te raden.
