Bottle sample at the tasting. Thanks ThreeCats. Pours dark brown with a tan head, leaves good lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate and coffee. Taste - roasted malt, dark fruits, mild bitterness. Smooth and creamy on palate. Nice.

Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks ThreeCats. Dark brown to black with a nice tan head. Aroma with malt, a bit of roastiness, chocolate, vanilla and a bit of dark fruits. Slightly sweetish flavor with malt, some roastiness, light fruity notes, some chocolate and a finish with a bit of bitterness. Full-bodied, silky mouthfeel. Doesn’t taste like a Barley Wine, maybe a bit like an Imperial Porter.

Dark brown with nice mocha head. Aroma of dark caramel, coffee, roast. Taste of roast, nuts, coffee, chalk.

33cl bottle bought from the brewer, aged two years in cellar. This dark ale has the bitter and toasted notes of an imperial stout without being one; "Bran" is surely one of the best brews by Montegioco. Unfortunately it is not very easy to find.

Bottle from Gbbf 2013 and drunk on a train. Black beer with a thick tan head.Lots of cchocolate on this good rich dark chocolate with a high cocoa percentage. It’s smooth in the mouth with some alcohol heat on the finish. More an imperial porter than a barley wine surely. Quite pokey in the alcohol but the chocolate is delicious.

Spina @ Porck’n Beer 2013. Nera con schiuma color cappuccino. Grande corpo, si evidanziano i malti tostatie il caffè. Finale lungo ancora al caffè... Ottima!

Bottle split at No.Au, Roma, 21/06/13. Mid black with a decent tan head. Good roasty blast on the nose, chocolate, dark fruits. Taste comprises dark chocolate, malt, toffee, dark fruits, sugars. Medium bodied with bite, roasty lingerings in the finish. Decent stuff but surprised to find this classed as a BW, had presumed it was an imperial stout when rating!

Montegioco Bran, supposedly a barleywine. Strong coffee and then choc aromas, with milder toffee and a little roast, more alcohol as it warms. Very dark brown, sparse light tan head that fades quickly. Less burnt flavours, more toffee and coffee with an initial sweet malt body leading to a lingering dry coffee finish. Body med to med-full. Nice and quite drinkable but bordering on a big porter perhaps?

25/05/2013 Ma che siete venuti a fà (tap). Nera, impenetrabile, bellissima schiuma beige a grana finissima, molto persistente.

Opaque black/brown with a foamy tan head and streaks of fine lace. Taste begins with roasted malt full of plums, currents, raisens, and sloe, on a bed of earthy bran. It grows through the palate to a mild bitter finish that goes on for a long time before dissapating to a neat vanilla that caps it off. Complex and interesting, it solidly delivers an earthy grain quality similar to heavy grains that give life to homemade bread. Good stuff!
