A deliciously dark beer conditioned in American oak pinot noir barrels. Meticulously monitored to achieve optimum balance of oak and pinot, overlaid with the rich, malty dark flavours of the porter. Racked off and filtered with a final flourish of dry hops to add a slight edge. Perfect for that moment when you sit down to a Sunday roast.

Aroma marcante de chocolate, cor negra e sabor amargo com uma nota meio azeda em seu final, mas que enriquece ainda mais o paladar.

500 ml bottle at Fat Badgers in Queenstown. Pours black with small tan head. Nice chocolate aroma. Barrel aging is subtle and adds a nice compliment. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Very nice chocolate aroma with a bit of vanilla. Sweet with notes of oak and red wine, maybe ram. In taste it has even more chocolate, noticeable less oak. Still though has this wooden, teniniczny mouthfeel. Medium body, easy drinking. Not mind blowing, but good solid beer.

500 ml bottle bought at YATA in MOKO, Mong Kok.

Looks: Clear deep blackish brown colour; One and a quarter finger head and crumpet y light beige foam which lasts for 2 minutes; Excellent sticky lacing and very fizzy carbonation.

Aroma: Fragrant and sweet dark malt, with strong roastyness, strong oak, roasted chestnuts, roasted coffee beans, toast, milked coffee, strong caramel, sugar, biscuits and light grass.

Taste: Mid to strong sweet dark malt, with strong roastyness, strong black coffee, light caramel, light toffee, burnt toast, light chocolate, strong sugar, dry biscuits, yeast, lime, quite strong bitter hops and sharp grass.

Body: Light body. Watery palate.

Mouth Feel: Full-blown dark maltyness in a very thin background. Very good roastyness but also very sweet, almost syrupy. Caramel is lighter than expected with right dose of burnt toast and good black coffee. Not much of oak characters figures here. Biscuits and lime to round. Simple and quite okay.

Hoppiness: Light grass in nose. Good lime and sharp grass in taste; Bitterness is moderate to strong for a lasting, astringent sweet bitter finish.

After Taste: Fairly dry. Sweet, malty and bitter to mouth.

Comments: This one feels like a half completed work, with the hoopla of oak barrels shows up in woody chestnut aroma, and while the full maltyness is nice, the overall taste too sweet and lacks sophistication. All its good looks and pinot noir seems futile. Drinkable but, this is Monteith, you know.

Wunderschönes tiefschwarze Farbe. Leicht brauner Schaum. Riecht nach Kaffee und Karamell. Der Geschmack unterstreicht den Kaffee. Süsser Abgang mit wenig Hopfen. Gutes Bier.

Roasty and oaky aroma. Medium viscous black body. Bittersweet caramel and oaky flavour. Earthy hops. Creamy mouthfeel. Medium to full body, lightly carbonated. Medium length bittersweet finish. Not bad!

Cervesa amb aroma i gust a xocolata, també destaquen tocs a vainilla, molt recomanable. Cerveza con aroma y sabor a chocolate, también destacan toques a vainilla, muy recomendable.

Bottle, 11/12/2014. Pours dark earthy brown, wispy head covering half the surface. Aroma is nutty chocolate and toast, touch of caramel, hint of wood. Taste is straightforward, dark malts, powdery chocolate with moderate roast bitterness, hops, hint of vanilla and wood to finish. Thin body. Mostly an average/mediocre porter for me.

Earplay (51) - NEW ZEALAND - NOV 2, 2014
Aroma of wood, whisky, some chocolate malt. Light carbonation. Taste is balanced, some oak-like flavours, med to full bodied, caramel, hints of alcohol?. Overall not bad for a macro-brew.

waiake (606) - Auckland, NEW ZEALAND - AUG 14, 2014
UPDATED: AUG 15, 2014 500ml bottle, 1st porter for a while, aroma is woody & chocolate while the flavours are slightly hoppy with a smooth tasty mix of coffee, malt & chocolate
