On tap @ Shakespears’, Auckland. At least I think it was at Shakespears’.New Zealand holiday 2011-12. Old notes. The aroma has roasted malts. Black coloured beer with a thin, off-white head. The taste is light roasted, has some coffee tones. Quite some carbonation. Thin, watery mouthfeel. MRMedellin (333) - Bogota, COLOMBIA - MAR 22, 2014
In glass is a brown red beer with a small and beige stable head, the aroma is quite shallow, but the coffee and caramel notes coming from the malt are really clear. In palate has a medium body, with a smooth texture and soft coffee flavors and a good bitterness at the end. Being a Schwarzbier should be served chilled. mattyhennessy (377) - Highton, AUSTRALIA - MAR 17, 2014
Pours an opaque black with a creamy tan head that holds firm. Very malty aroma with some stonefruit and and coffee. Flavour matches the aroma and is slightly dominated by roasty malt flavour. Hop bitterness is somewhat more pronounced than many dark beers. Surprisingly easy drinking. Muggus69 (2807) - Yarram, Vic, AUSTRALIA - FEB 25, 2014
OLD NOTES JAN 5, 2004
The aroma has a fair bit of roasted malt and coffee chocolate to it. Maybe a bit of dark fruitiness in there too. Pours black with a dark orange tinge and a fading head. A roasted malt kind of body. Get a fair bit of coffee and toffee towards the end. A few little dark chocolate and fruit flavours in there, maybe plum. Finish with a bit of metalic bitterness. Not bad, certainly much more full bodied than other Monteiths beers i’ve sampled. Beerhunter111 (23265) - Beerland, GERMANY - JAN 16, 2014
Schwarzes Bier mit geringem Schaum. Geruch röstmalzig süß. Geschmack röstmalzig, erdig, minimal säuerlich. Ein einfaches Schwarzbier!

On tap at the brewery in Greymouth, NZ
Excellent clarity in this very dark brown ale. The body is topped by a creamy tan head that is very durable and leaves the glass almost totally coated.
Both flavor and aroma are about average for style, if a touch more hoppy than a European version. Dark and medium roasted malts lend a lingering malty aftertaste. No burnt notes.
Feel: Medium body with medium carbonation. Smooth.
O: solid version of style.

The head is ok, body darkred-black. It smells darkmalty, roasty. The taste is darkmalty, roasty, bit aromatic. Not that interesting but the malttaste is quite nice. MichaelAwesome (6546) - Wanne-Eickel, GERMANY - DEC 16, 2013
Pouring black with a slightly roasted nose. Some sourness with roasted malt and nuts in the aroma. Not really entertaining, but a decent drinkable beer. McTapps (6984) - Reutlingen, GERMANY - NOV 26, 2013
Beer pours out of the bottle in a deep black colour with low creamy head and medium body. Aroma of malt and roast. Taste of intense malt, leaves, woods, milk and nuts. Light sour, light smokey-roasty finish. Drinkable but not really nice. nlc (93) - Amsterdam & Rotterdam, NETHERLANDS - NOV 19, 2013
Monteith valt over het algemeen tegen. Ze weten heus wel te brouwen maar is naar mijn idee gebrouwen voor een groot publiek. Alles is erg vlak van smaak. Niet echt craftbeer te noemen.
