The first one (still one of our favourite Moon Dog beers) spent time inside Bourbon barrels; the second – the intensely smokey, woody one – made wild whoopee with the inside of former whisky barrels. This time around it’s rum (from Hoochery Distillery) and the results are closer to the balance between beer and barrel of the first affair. The effects of the barrel are prominent without being overpowering and some rumminess (which we’re pretty sure has a different meaning to what we intend, something to do with Benny Hill or 1950’s pier end postcards from Southend, Essex) comes through as the beer warms. The oak adds a drying quality to the beer too, which holds up nicely to an evening’s sipping, with or without pipe and slippers.

UPDATED: APR 9, 2014 Mild sweet aroma, strong smokey favour, rum is definitely there too. It?s a very strong, intense beer, not for the faint of heart.

Have to say liking the smokey integration into this beer as it gives it another level of complexity. Not quite the richness that I was hoping for with the use of rum barrel, but on the whole this is a very good beer.

Pours dark, dark, dark, brown with a caramel tan head that maintains a thick meniscus around the glass. Balanced smokey-sweet aromas with a nutty undertone. Flavour is of peated whiskey, chocolate, and oak. Spicy phenols join the party in the late palate. A chocolaty, smokey finish and drying mouthfeel complete the sip, inviting you for more.

0,33 [email protected] OPP. Sakea, punertavaan taittava tummanruskea. Tuoksussa rommia, puuta, savuisuutta, makeaa mallasta, ehkä aavistus hapanta kirsikkaa. Maussa nokea, rommia, mallasta, humalaa. En tykkää.

0,33l bottle @ One Pint Pub. Pours very dark brown with a low brown head. Aroma is sweet roasted malts, rum and smoke. Flavor is roasted malts, peat, smoke and some hops. Could use some more body, but great.

hazy sepia, thin cream ring. Light rum sweetness in nose, peppery, heavy char oak. Sweet front, tar and lightly burnt oak, more booze growing mid, more burnt aspects. Full bodied finish, chalky end. Way too much burnt here

nimbleprop (8476) - SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA - DEC 7, 2014
12oz bottle pours a murky, oily black with some creamy egg yolk colored head. Nose of rubber, raisin, black pepper, yeasty, burnt caramel. Flavor is rubbery, crackery, burnt bread, medicinal, lots of charcoal. Full bodied, boozy finish.

radagast83 (8152) - Arlington, Virginia, USA - DEC 6, 2014
Bottle. Poured a dark black-brown color with a small off-white head. Aroma was mostly smoke, with some woody notes. Bitter, dark chocolate. No real rum notes, but general barrel character.

solidfunk (9035) - Washington D.C., Washington DC, USA - DEC 6, 2014
Very smoky. Some dark chocolate. A touch of wood but I don’t get any rum here. Bitter finish. Black pour with OK head and lacing. Bottle.
