There are two new brewers in Victoria. One crafts his science with malt, hops, & yeast, the other with berries from the Coffee shrub. Kalen selected a coffee from Ethiopia with exceptional fruit qualities and cold brewed it to highlight this unique characteristic. Clay provided a strong, effervescent base and fermented it dry with Saison and Champagne yeasts. Inspired by the great fruit beers of Belgium, they look to re-define what it means to fuse these two great beverages. Bright, fruity and acidic, Shatterbier challenges preconceptions and dares to break away from the norm.

Bottle share. Cloudy gold. Aroma of green pepper infused straw. Taste is spicy bitterness, and citrus zest sweet. Long dry finish. Oddly 1-dimensional.

GothGargoyle (2587) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - NOV 22, 2014
Golden with a pale head. Aroma is coffee, summer fruits, hint of citrus. Medium-light bodied, creamy mouthfeel, lightly fruity on the palate. Taste is coffee, citrus, honey.

Golden blond pour with a massive head. Coffee aroma, and tart yeasty smell. Taste is light coffee, some candy sugars, some floral hops. Interesting, but not spectacular.

750ml green glass bottle with silver grey wax, thanks to DanielCoor for sharing! Half hazy golden orange color. Good thin off-white head, although lace doesn’t really stick. Nice coffee aroma in the nose, some banana, light spicy belgian aromas, belgian yeast. Satisfying amount of coffee, and nice banana belgian type fruitiness. Medium-plus body. Smooth, kind of chewy lighter carbonation. Lightly dry finish. Hides 9% alcohol very well, drinks like 7%.

Lagerboy (2206) - British Columbia, CANADA - SEP 7, 2013
750 ml capped and waxed bottle 450/1200 shared with Fast & Aggressive in my sweet new Duvel tulips! Murky orange brown, big frothy off-white head settles leaving a lasting swirl of film. Aroma is fruity, peach and apricot, musty, yeasty. Bam! Full pull espresso taste on the tongue initially, with a spicy, yeasty, citrus fruity strong Belgian Ale lurking behind. Lively carbonation, light-medium body, lightly hopped. ABV gets more noticeable towards the finish. Unique and enjoyable, 1-N-Dun. Shadoobie, shattered, shattered. DNFL (Definitely Not For Lagerboys)

Pours gold with white head. Aromas of slight fruit and spices. Flavors that don’t provide much of a profile for my palate. I was disappointed with this beer.

daknole (11049) - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - AUG 4, 2013
Gold pour, white head. Crackers, light fruit, yeast, dry finish. Nothing so great here.

CapFlu (5127) - Victoria, British Columbia, CANADA - JUL 25, 2013
(750ml bottle) Purchased at The Strath for ~$12. Pours a huge frothy white head atop a clouded golden brown boys. Nose is fairly bright and yeasty. Good fruity front, some 7-Up and graham wafers. Highly biscuit and lemony citrus. Lasting carbonation on the tongue.

RumRunner101 (918) - Alberta, CANADA - JUL 25, 2013
Pours a hazy gold with a big white head. Aroma is grain, lemon, yeast, little bit of espresso. Full bodied, lots of carbonation. The alcohol comes through a bit. The coffee is light and doesn’t really come through that much. Love the idea, and I’d try it again if they re-did it, but this one is a little messy.

reebtogi (6270) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - JUN 30, 2013
750ml bottle capped with wax coating over the top pours a hazy golden orange color with a huge white head that leaves almost no lacing. Aroma is citrus and spices and yeast with a slight trace of coffee. Taste is a lemon tartness with a bold spicy hop bitterness and an underlying fruity and grainy malt sweetness. Could barely detect any coffee, but it was there. This is one of the best and most unique brews I have sampled in a long while. Flavours are well balanced, body is good and carbonation is decent.
