Tap at Flavor. Clear very deep ruby with a two finger beige head, good retention. Roasted malts and chocolate up don’t with some lightly sweet caramel and some lactic acidity behind. Flavor has a soft sourness all the way through that goes pretty well with the roast and chocolate notes. Lightly sweet caramel notes toward the finish. I’m getting light vinous notes as well. Sourness peaked at a 2-3, light charred at the end. Bitterness peaked at a 3. Light to moderate prickly carbonation with a light body. Very nice and subtle. beerguy101 (5360) - Newark, California, USA - MAY 19, 2010
Sampled on 5/16/2010. I think this is a sour mash version of Death and Taxes? This Schwarzbier pours an eclipse black color from the tap. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is chocolate and coffee, roasted malts and slightly tart. A medium bodied schwarzbier. The malts are roasty with some coffee and chocolate. There is a touch of sourness and some funk. The hops are earthy and floral. Nice carbonation. A touch tart and sour, perhaps a little funky. A very interesting take on the style, the sour mash adds some interesting mix and match flavors with the malts. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sour.
